10. Use a cleaning pad to wipe the thermal grease from the heat sink and the top of the CPU. Dispose of the
cleaning pad after all of the thermal grease is removed.
11. Carefully apply appropriate amount of thermal grease to the top of the CPU in the shape of a cross
or a circle as shown.
Notes:
• Do not touch the thermal grease.
• Keep the thermal grease off the system board.

12. Reinstall the heat sink and fan assembly on the new system board. See "For service technician only:
replacing the heat sink and fan assembly" on page 92.
13. Reinstall other parts that you have removed one by one in the reversed sequence as you remove them.
See "Removing and installing hardware" on page 42.
14. Connect all cables to the system board. See "System board components" on page 20.
If you are instructed to return the old system board, follow all packaging instructions and use any packaging
materials that are supplied to you for shipping. The old system board must be returned with a CPU socket
cover to protect the pins during shipping and handling.
To install the CPU socket cover, do the following:
1. After you have removed the CPU from the old system board, close the CPU retainer and then lock
the small handle to secure the retainer in place.
2. Note the orientation of the socket cover, and install one side of the socket cover into the CPU socket.
Then, carefully press the other side of the socket cover downward until it snaps into position.

3. Carefully check the four corners of the socket cover to ensure that the cover is seated securely.
