Erratic idling behavior, poor
acceleration
(even though you have opened low
speed screw one quarter of a turn)
Idle setting is too lean.
:
Turn the low speed adjusting screw
(L) counterclockwise until engine
runs and accelerates smoothly.
It is usually necessary to change the
setting of the idle speed adjusting screw
(LA) after every correction to the low
speed adjusting screw (L).
Fine Tuning for Operation at High
Altitude
A slight correction of the setting may be
necessary if engine power is not
satisfactory when operating at high
altitude:

Check the standard setting.

Warm up the engine.
:
Turn high speed screw (H) slightly
clockwise (leaner). On models with

, turn no further than stop.

If the setting is too lean there is
a risk of engine damage due to
insufficient lubrication and
overheating.

If the engine is down on power,
check the spark arresting screen in
the muffler
All models
:
Allow muffler to cool down.
:
Remove the bar and chain.
The following screwed joints are
secured with threadlocking adhesive
(Loctite 243). Before assembling, coat
the screws with Loctite 243 or equivalent
adhesive – if necessary, have this work
performed by your STIHL dealer.

Take out the screws (1).
:
Remove the chain catcher (2) and
splatter shield (3).

:
Take out the screws (1).
:
Remove the cover plate (2).
:
Remove the spark arresting
screen (3).
:
Clean spark arresting screen.
If screen is damaged or heavily

carbonized, fit a new one.

Refit the spark arresting screen in
the reverse sequence.
