This document covers every aspect of administering the Spectralink 87-Series handsets, also known as PIVOT™ by Spectralink. The primary tool for administering the handsets is the CMS, the Configuration Management System. This GUI program is opened in a browser and provides an easy and intuitive way to configure the handsets and manage the deployment.
Specific Documents AP Configuration Guides show you how to correctly configure access points and WLAN controllers (if applicable) and identify the optimal settings that support Spectralink 87-Series handsets. The guides can be found at the View Certified page. Spectralink 87-Series Installation and Configuration Tool Administration Guide The SLIC tool provides step-by-step instructions for configuring wireless settings required for the handsets to associate with the wireless LAN.
Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Telephone User Guide The User Guide provides detailed information about using the features of the 87-Series handsets. For information on IP PBX and softswitch vendors, see PIVOT by Spectralink Call Server Interoperability Guide. Conventions Used In This Document Icons Icons indicate extra information about nearby text.
The Web Info icon highlights supplementary information available online such as documents or downloads on support.spectralink.com or other locations. Timesaver A time-saving tip is typically used to mention or highlight a faster or alternative method for users who may already be familiar with the operation or method being discussed.

Italics Used to emphasize text, to show example values or inputs, and to show titles of reference documents available from the Spectralink Support Web site and other reference sites. Underlined blue Used for URL links to external Web pages or documents. If you click on text in this style, you will be linked to an external document or Web page.
Part I: Using CMS CMS is a powerful interface for configuring and managing Spectralink 87-Series handsets. Part I details each page of the CMS and each setting on each page. Installing the CMS is fully covered in the Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Telephone Deployment Guide.
Chapter 1: Getting Started with CMS Instructions for installing CMS are in Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Telephone Deployment Guide. Please refer to that document if you are just getting started. This Chapter assumes that you have successfully installed CMS and are ready to use it for handset provisioning.
You will see some settings that use a dashed line in the text field, such as Enable / Disable Spectralink SIP. When you see this, it indicates that whatever the current setting is should be retained or “use whatever is currently configured in the handset”...
The customer receives the APK (Authorization Product Key) and CMS serial number via an email which also includes a URL. Click the URL to generate the license key and register with Spectralink. Copy the license key. Open CMS and navigate to Home> CMS Administrative> Server Settings> License for this software.
Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Telephones Administration Guide The Home Page Major groups Initial Setup allows you to load certificates, configure Wireless Profiles and set up over the air (OTA) provisioning for the handsets. Device Management allows you to view and configure devices, set up phone groups, reset device passwords, and move a configuration to a different device when a user’s handset must...
Page 17
Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Telephones Administration Guide Tip: What is a “device”? “Device” is the term used by Android to refer to the hardware using the Android platform. In this document, we use the word “device” interchangeably with “handset”. CMS Administrative is where you set up CMS users and manage the CMS software and other settings for the CMS server itself.
Three types of certificates are identified: CA, PAC and Other. Refer to Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Security Implementation Guide for more information on certificates and their use in Wi- Fi security methods.
Page 19
Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Telephones Administration Guide Deleting a certificate Check the certificate you wish to delete. Click the Action dropdown and select Delete this certificate. Go through the confirmation page to finish deleting the selected certificate(s). Adding a certificate Ensure the certificate is located where you can browse to it from the computer running your browser.
Wireless profiles ask for the security type used by the SSID. For a full discussion of the various security methods and how they are implemented on this page, see Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Security Implementation Guide.
Notification drawer. Over the Air Provisioning The CMS can host the Spectralink 87-Series handset software which means you do not have to provide a separate provisioning server to host software updates. This page is where you load the software updates that will be downloaded by the handsets. See Updating the Handsets step-by-step instructions.
Chapter 3: Device Management The Device Management group of pages is where the handsets are listed, administered, configured, grouped and so forth. Device List When the handsets associate with the wireless LAN and announce themselves to the CMS, they are listed in the Device list by model and MAC address. Several types of administrative actions can be performed from this page as indicated by column headings.
[select MAC address from dropdown]. View configuration the View Configuration button opens a page that displays the configuration at the code level. This is used only when working with Spectralink support personnel. Groups If the handset is assigned to a group, it is identified in this column.
Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Telephones Administration Guide Summary column: Change device When you click the Summary name, a page opens that displays information about the handset. Here you can change the Summary name and add notes about this particular handset. 721-0011-000_B.docx...
Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Telephones Administration Guide Spectralink recommends: If you change the name of the handset, it will display the new name in the Summary column. It is very handy to be able to easily find a handset by MAC address and extension.
Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Telephones Administration Guide Spectralink recommends: Pushing firmware to many handsets at once will require an unusual amount of server resources. If you are updating more than a few handsets at once, limit the number that you do at one time. Select a maximum of 50 handsets at a time, usually one page of handsets at a time is a good benchmark to use.
CMS configuration, a potentially confusing situation. Follow the installation steps laid out in Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Telephone Deployment Guide for a smooth deployment.
While it is possible to load other SIP applications on the handset, any other SIP application could potentially conflict and cause significant operational issues. Do not load another SIP app on your 87-Series handsets unless specifically advised to do so by Spectralink support personnel.
Page 30
You will see some settings that use a dashed line in the text field, such as the Enable / Disable Spectralink SIP setting shown below. When you see this, it indicates that whatever the current setting is should be retained or “use whatever is currently configured in the handset”...
Page 31
If utilizing a DNS SRV record, the SIP Server Port should be specified through the SRV record and left blank in this field. If you specify a port number here, then the Spectralink 87-Series handset will not attempt to use SRV records at all to discover the SIP Server address and instead will only query for a DNS A record.
Page 32
Extension Number (set at Device level) The user part of the SIP Address of Record (for example, 1002). (for example, the Address of Record would become 1002@Spectralink.com where 1002 is the Extension Number and Spectralink.com is the Server value set above.).
Page 33
Admin Tip Many call servers will send this information in the Message-Account field of the SIP Notify messages to the Spectralink 87-Series phone automatically when the phone initially registers. Leave this field blank to allow the phone to attempt auto-discovery of this parameter using the call server provided message-account field address.
Page 34
Accepts: Enable/Disable Default value: Enable Spectralink recommends: When to disable SIP standard hold signaling Spectralink recommends that customers leave this setting enabled unless hold / resume is not functioning correctly on the call server the customer is attempting to interoperate against.
Some call servers may require that a handset send a separate SIP Subscribe message in order to receive message waiting notifications. Spectralink recommends that customers leave this setting disabled unless the 87-Series handset is not receiving message waiting indicators.
Page 36
Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Telephones Administration Guide Spectralink handsets support corporate directories that support server-side sorting and those that do not. For servers that do not support server-side sorting, sorting is performed on the handset. Tip: Better Performance With Server-Side Sorting Spectralink recommends using corporate directories that have server-side sorting for better performance.

Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Telephones Administration Guide fast. The least sensitive setting would require quite a bit of jostling before a warning was triggered. The length of time that the user would have to maintain that amount of motion (or a more severe one) is configurable.
Page 41
Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Telephones Administration Guide What does the dashed line indicate? SAFE and Panic button settings make use of a dashed line in the text field. The dashed line indicates that the setting has been configured at the device level.
Page 42
Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Telephones Administration Guide The SAFE / Panic button screen Monitoring Monitoring must be enabled in order for any of the SAFE motion settings to trigger. No move sensitivity No move is the degree of motionlessness or lack of any type of movement of the handset. Level 7 would require that the user be almost completely still for the warning to trigger.
Page 43
Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Telephones Administration Guide No move timeout The length of time that the user would have to maintain the configured degree of stillness (or a more severe degree). It is measured in seconds. Minimum = 5, maximum = 300.
Up to five emergency contacts can be configured with both a name and a number. Ensure you follow any dial plan rules when entering the number. Spectralink 87-Series handsets can operate in a group broadcast mode called Push-to-Talk (PTT). PTT is a licensed feature which can be activated in the Feature license section.
Page 45
Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Telephones Administration Guide With PTT, the administrator subscribes users to some or all of these channels to receive, and optionally send, PTT broadcasts. In PTT mode, the handsets behave like walkie-talkies: the handset transmits audio over a built-in speakerphone and recipients can respond to the broadcast.
Page 46
Spectralink 87-Series Wireless Telephones Administration Guide Caution: Select the level for PTT configuration PTT configuration methods are mutually exclusive. You cannot set all devices at the Enterprise level and some at the Group level and others at the Device level without overwriting the more general configuration.
