2. THEORETICAL INFORMATION CONCERNING INSTALLATION

2.1.

WOOD PELLETS

The wood pellets are made of sawdust from natural, dried wood (not
painted). The material is very firm because the wood contains lignin that
makes it possible to make wood pellets without the use of glue or binding
agents.
The market includes several sorts of wood pellets with different features,
depending on the used wood blend. The diameter varies from 6mm to
8mm, and they have a standard length of 5mm to 30mm. Quality wood
pellets have a density of between 600 kg/m³ and more than 750 kg/m³,
while the water content is 5% to 8% of their weight.
Wood pellets are an eco-friendly type of fuel, since the wood residues are
utilised to the widest extent possible, and you get a cleaner combustion
than using fossil fuel; however, the wood pellets also include technical
advantages. Good quality wood has a fuel value of 4.4 Kw/kg (with 15%
moisture, after 18 months of storage), and wood pellets have a fuel value
of 5.3 Kw/kg.
In order to ensure acceptable combustion, the wood pellets have to be
stored in a moisture-free place, protected against dirt. The wood pellets
are supplied in bags of 15 kg, which makes them very easy to store.
Good quality wood pellets ensure good combustion and reduce the emis-
sion of harmful substances to the environment.
The brazier and combustion chamber have to be
cleaned more often when using fuel of poor quality.
The wood pellets must only be made of wood sorts, not treated with
chemicals.
The most important qualification certifications for wood pellets on the
European market are DINplus and Ö-Norm M7135. The guarantee com-
pliance with the following:
• Fuel value: 4.9 Kw/kg
• Water content: max. 10% of the weight
• Axis rate: max. 0.5% of the weight
• Diameter: 5 – 6mm
• Length: max. 30mm
• Content: 100% untreated wood without added binding agents
(bark rate max. 5%)
• Packing material: Bags made of eco-friendly or biodegradable material
