Stove had been operating without problems the prior evening. In the morning I added wood to a small bed of remaining coals. Smoke backed up into the room. I added paper which did not resolve the problem. I then added kindling and paper with the same result. I repeated this with a firestarter stick. It burned well until the door was shut and then quickly smothered out. This occurred again after another attempt. The bypass and air control both move freely. The firebox is now thoroughly cleaned out. How should I proceed?

If a Lopi Evergreen stove is experiencing smoke backup after adding wood and the fire goes out, open the bypass damper before opening the stove door. This helps pull the smoke away from the door and directs it up the chimney, preventing smoke from entering the room. Ensuring proper draft establishment in the chimney is also critical for effective stove operation.
