Ch. 5 • Song Styles

What is a Song Style?

A Song Style is an 8-track (max) Song created by recording a Style (Rom or
User) with the keyboard tracks (Upper 1, Upper 2, Lower). In practice, what
you normally do in real time with a Style (use the Intro, Fill, Ending, change
Style, etc.) is captured by the sequencer in Song Style Record mode to create
a Song Style. Song Styles offer an excellent means of preparing musical back-
grounds for a soloist. For example, you can record two keyboard tracks (Upper
2 & Lower) with accompaniments, then use Upper 1 to play the melody in real
time with the Song Style in playback.
The events generated by the panel interventions are recorded in the COMMON
track. The chords that trigger the auto-accompaniments are recorded in the
CHORD track. The COMMON and CHORD tracks activate automatically when
you enter Song Style Record mode.
In many respects, Song Styles are similar to Songs but they do not contain a
Lyrics track and they cannot be saved as Midi Files.
The Song Style Preset
A Song Style is governed by a single associated Song Style Preset which de-
termines how the Song Style plays. When you select an "empty" Song Style
and press the RECORD button, the recalled Song Style Preset automatically
configures the instrument to record a Style with 2 keyboard tracks activated for
the recording. Once you enter Song Style Record mode, you are free to select
the Style to record with, or you can program the Song Style Preset recalled by
the empty Song Style before entering the recording.

Song Style Recording

Your PS1000 is not supplied with Song Styles in memory. To be able to select
Song Styles, you must either record them using the procedure explained on
page 2.38 of this chapter, or load disk-based PS1000 Song Styles using the
Load All procedure. PS1000 can house up to 8 Song Styles in the memory
locations 112 - 119. On page 2.39 you'll find information regarding how to
select and playback Song Styles.
You can record a Song Style in two ways:
A. Select the Rom or User Style that you wish to use for the recording then
press the RECORD button.
In this case, you will record your Song Style using the Song Style Preset of
the element selected.
B. Select an empty Song Style location (Free), program the Song Style Preset
and press the RECORD button to start the recording.
In this case, you can program the Song Style Preset before entering Record
mode.
In both cases, a name for the Song Style can be entered as soon as you enter
Record mode.
