    Power and start-up Power and Standby The first thing you might notice about the Genesys En- semble is that it has two power switches. The main power switch, is located in the left side of the keyboard and this is used to com- pletely shut-off all power to the instrument.

    First time start-up The first time you switch on the Genesys Ensemble, a num- ber of different things may happen. Exactly what happens will depend on how much time has passed since the unit was last turned on. The Genesys Ensemble contains an internal re-chargeable battery which is used to retain the contents of its memory while the unit is switched off.

    The Control Panel Before you start to use the Genesys Ensemble, you should familiarize yourself with some of the main controls and fea- tures which will be used in each example. These four buttons are used to The Arrow Keys.

    Exploring the Genesys Ensemble The Genesys Ensemble is divided into three main sections. On the right side, in the section marked PRESET FAMILIES you will find all of the factory preset sounds which are di- vided into families for easy access. You may also load your own new sounds into this area.

    Selecting Presets The sounds in the Genesys Ensemble are arranged into what we call PRESET FAMILIES. There are 16 families in all representing different categories of instrument. Each fam- ily contains 16 SOUND PRESETS. Selecting a SOUND PRESET is simple. First press one of the PRESET FAMILIES buttons, (for example Piano).

    You can think of the sound presets as a kind of “showcase” of the best sounds that the Genesys Ensemble has to offer. However, the Genesys Ensemble contains many more sounds than just those which you will find in the sound presets.

    In PRO SPLIT mode, the chord recognition is divided into two parts: bass and accompaniment. The bass part is con- trolled by the notes played on the left side of the split while all other accompaniment parts are controlled by the chords you play on the right side of the split.

    That’s it. If you now press START/STOP and play a chord in the left hand section of the keyboard, you will hear the style accompaniment playing along. You can see the name of the style you’re currently using in the upper part of the screen. You can select a different style by simply pressing one the STYLE FAMILY buttons and choosing one of the titles in the screen by pressing the function button beside it.

    Sometimes, however, you might want to change from one style to another and keep the same tempo as before. In this case, turning TEMPO LOCK on will freeze the current tempo allowing it to be changed only by rotating the dial when you are in the home screen.

    Mixer Lock Each style contains a factory pre-programmed “mix” which sets the appropriate volume level for each instrument in the style. Whenever you select a new style, this mix is automatically recalled. Sometimes you might wish to change the mix manually, (using the sliders or the MIXER section), and have your changes remain even when you switch to a different style.

    Making Your Own CDs The MAKE CD button on the Genesys Ensemble provides a simple and convenient way to make your own music CDs and CD-ROMs directly from the instrument. The Genesys Ensemble can use both CD-R and CD-RW disks.

  • Page 116 O.K. Let’s get started. Insert a blank CD into the drive. Press the MAKE CD button, choose CD AUDIO and then press ENTER. The screen is now divided into two main windows. In the top window you can see the WAVE folder and, by using the arrow keys, you can look inside the sub-folders to find the first track you want to copy to your new CD.

    NOTE: SCORE and LYRICS in Songs Only GEM songs will be instantly set-up to display both score and lyrics when you play them. Other song types, such as midifiles and Mp3s, may contain lyrics which can be viewed by pressing the LYRICS button in the normal way but they will not contain score or chords.

    DISK Once you start creating your own songs, sound and styles on the Genesys Ensemble, a good understanding the func- tions of the DISK menu will be essential. The disk menu allows you to access and organize all of the various storage devices connected to the instrument.
