    Overview 1-7 Communications Port The 1000 Series UPS models include a communications port that allows the UPS to exchange data with the host computer. Power management software (supplied by Compaq) gives users access to status reporting and power management features.

    UPS can provide individual server control. For example, if a network includes two servers (with one running Windows NT, and the other running Unix), a 1000 Series UPS with a Multi-Server UPS Card can establish direct communications with each server. Allocate a separate UPS load segment to supply power to each server and to the devices associated with that server.

    Installation 2-11 Powering up the UPS When the unit is plugged in for the first time, the UPS automatically initiates a self-test. The front panel LED display lights will go on and off during the self-test. If the self-test is completed successfully, the UPS enters Standby mode.

    With the UPS in Standby mode, allow the batteries to charge before putting the UPS into service. IMPORTANT: The batteries will charge to 90% of their capacity within approximately 4 hours. Compaq recommends allowing the batteries to charge for 24 hours before using them to supply backup power to devices.
