(SNMP Modules) including media conver-
sion, mode conversion, bandwidth manage-
ment and switching media conversion mod-
ules. Each chassis in the Media Converter
System II Series features an SNMP-manage-
ment agent embedded directly into the
backplane which eliminates the need to
purchase, install and configure a separate

management module.

The Media Converter System II Series includes 2, 8 and 18-slot chassis:

(LMC5102A and LMC5102A-DC) feature two or eight slots, respective-
ly, for installing SNMP Modules and a fixed, internal 100-240 VAC or
-48 VDC power supply.

LMC5164A [60 watt]) is a 3U high, rackmountable chassis that features
18 slots for installing SNMP Modules, one 100-240 VAC or -48 VDC
power module and an additional slot for a second, redundant power
supply.
Installing Media Converter System II
Before installing an SNMP Module into a Media Converter System II chas-
sis, install the chassis first. When installing the chassis, be sure to observe the
following precautions to prevent electrical or mechanical damage:
• Stay within the chassis power rating to prevent overload of supply
circuits or damage to overcurrent protection and supply wiring.
• Maintain reliable earth ground, especially when connecting to a
power strip instead of directly to a branch circuit.
• Protect your chassis from exposure to sunlight and electrical or
magnetic fields.
• Ensure that the equipment rack remains stable, even with the
addition of the chassis and its associated cabling.

I N S T A L L A T I O N T I P When testing, Black Box recommends you test your module first in an unmanaged environment. To do this, disable management (i.e., move the “SNMP” switch to the OFF position), follow the unmanaged configu- ration instructions (see application module manual), then install the unit, connect the cables and test the LEDs.
  • Page 3: Installing Modules

Installing Modules Refer to the installation guide shipped with the SNMP Module for configu- ration information. To install a module, remove the blank bracket (if present) covering the slot where you’ll be installing the module. Slide the module into the chassis using the card guides, then secure the module to the chassis by tightening the captive screw.
  • Page 4 In addition to the above functions, HUBCTRL32 offers an authorized IP address system and access restriction to MIB (Management Information Base) groups supported by Black Box manageable devices. These extra lay- ers of security are purely optional and do not affect SNMP compatibility in...

HUBCTRL32 can also be used to upload new versions of the system soft- ware and new MIB information. It also offers diagnostic capabilities for faster resolution of technical support issues. HUBCTRL32 works with the following platforms: Windows 98™, Windows NT™ and Windows 2000™. HUBCTRL32 can be found on the iView CD.

Creating Community Strings The default community string is named “public” and has read/write access. Black Box recommends you set up two communities: one with read-only access (for general use), the other with read/write access (for the administrator). To create a new community string, go to the main config- uration screen and press C.

To remove password protection, select P and instead of entering a password, press Enter. Should you forget the password, use HUBCTRL32 to access the back-up copy of the PROM, then reburn the flash PROM (or contact Black Box technical support for assistance). Enabling/Disabling DHCP To Enable/Disable DHCP , press D.

User Replaceable Fans Although Black Box provides the highest quality fan assemblies available, it is possible for these fans to malfunction. The mechanical nature of these parts makes them more susceptible to wear and tear, so they often wear out before the accompanying electronic components.
  • Page 12 4) Remove the fan slowly from its mount, then reach into the chassis and disconnect the female connector on the fan harness from the back- plane. For the 2-Slot Chassis, the backplane is on the left and for the two fans in the 8-Slot chassis, the connectors are connected to a fan cable extension.
