ENGINE MAINTENANCE
Checking
the Engine Oil
Onlyusehigh quality detergent oilrated with APIservice c lassification
SF,8G,SH, orSJ.Select t heoil's SAEviscosity grade according to
theexpected o perating t emperature. Follow thechart below.
Althougn multi-viscosity o ils(5W20, 1 0W30, e tc.)improve s tarting
incoldweather, theywillresult i nincreased o ilconsumption
when
used above 32°F.Check your engine oil level m orefrequently toavoid
possible engine damage fromrunning l ow onoil.

Tochecktheengineoil,proceed as follows:
Ensurethatthetractor is ona levelsurface,
Cleanthe oil fillareaofanydebris.
1. Remove thedipstick andwipewitha cleancloth.
2,
Insertandtightendipstick.
3.
Remove thedipstick andchecktheoil level.It shouldbe atthe
Fullmarkonthe dipstick. S eeFigure9.

If low,addoil slowlyintotheengine oil fill.Donotoverfill.Nter
addingoil,waitoneminute andthenrecheck theoil level.
5.
Replace andtightendipstick.
Changing
Engine Oil
Theengine oilshould bechanged i nthefirst5 hours andthen every
50 hours oronce a season. T ochange t heengine oil,proceed a s
follows:
1.
With engine OFFbutstillwarm,disconnect spark plug wire and
keepit away fromspark plug.
2.
Remove t heoiltillcap/dipstick fromtheoiltill tube. S eeFigure 9.
3.
Clip theoil drainsleeve (packed w ith thismanual) onto theoil
drain port.Route theopposite endofthesleeve intoanappropri-
ateoilcollection container with a capacity great e nough tocollect
theused oil.
4.
Remove t heoildrain plug, Theoilwill begintodrain out ofthe
engine.
5.
Aftertheoilhasfinished draining, replace theoildrain plug and
tighten. Becareful not toovertighten.
6.
Remove theoildrain sleeve andstore forlater use.
7.
Refill theenginewithnewmotor oiluntil t heoillevel o nthe
dipstick r eadsFULL.Replace t heoilfill cap/dipstick.
Usedoil is a hazardous w asteproduct.Dispose of usedoil properly.
Donotdiscard withhousehold waste. C heckwithyourlocal a uthori-
tiesor or contact1-800-4-MY-HOME
fora list ofsafedisposal/
recycling facilities.
Changing
the Oil Filter
1.
Drain the oil from the engine as described above,
2.
Removethe oil tilter and dispose of properly. See Figure 10.

Beforeyouinstallthenewoil filter,lightlylubricate theoil filter
gasket w ithfresh,cleanoil.
4.
Install t heoil tilterbyhanduntilthegasketcontacts theoil filter
adapter, thentighten theoil filter1/2to3/4 turns.
5.
Addoil asdescribed above.
6.
Startand runtheengine.Astheengine warmsup,checkforoil
leaks.
7.
Stoptheengineandchecktheoil level.It shouldbe atthe FULL
markon thedipstick.
