FRONT AXLE—Service Information—Specifications

Steering K n u c k l e B e a r i n g A d j u s t m e n t
T h e adjustment o f t h e steering k n u c k l e bearings c a n be
checked b y lifting t h e wheel u p a n d d o w n w i t h a bar.
I n case
of looseness, t h e a d j u s t i n g p l u g s h o u l d be tightened.
U s e a
wrench w i t h a h a n d l e 12 t o 15 i n . long a n d tighten t h e a d -
j u s t i n g p l u g as tight as possible b y h a n d .
D o n o t loosen the
adjustment except t o e l i m i n a t e b i n d i n g i n the steering.

F r o n t W h e e l B e a r i n g A d j u s t m e n t
T h e procedure t o follow i n a d j u s t i n g the front wheel bear-
ings is first t o m a k e sure t h a t the wheel is a l l the w a y o n the
spindle.
T h e n t i g h t e n t h e adjusting n u t as t i g h t as possible
b y h a n d using a w r e n c h w i t h a h a n d l e 12 t o 15 i n . l o n g , after
w h i c h b a c k off t h e n u t o n e t h i r d t u r n o r t w o flats.
If t h e
l o c k i n g device c a n n o t be p l a c e d i n p o s i t i o n w i t h o u t c h a n g i n g
the adjustment,
t i g h t e n i n s t e a d o f loosen t h e a d j u s t i n g n u t
u n t i l i t c a n be secured w i t h t h e l o c k i n g device.
It is preferable
to have t h e adjustment o n the t i g h t side rather t h a n t h e loose
side p r o v i d e d it is n o t necessary t o tighten t h e n u t m o r e t h a n
one h a l f the distance t o t h e next cotter p i n slot.
It is also a g o o d p l a n t o t u r n t h e wheels t o w a r d t h e right
side w h e n a d j u s t i n g t h e left wheel bearings a n d t o w a r d t h e
left side when a d j u s t i n g t h e r i g h t wheel bearings t o assure
full release o f t h e brakes.
C A U T I O N : W h e n a d j u s t i n g t h e front wheel bearings, care
s h o u l d be t a k e n n o t t o m i s t a k e p l a y i n the k n u c k l e bolts for
p l a y i n the wheel bearings.
