T h e rear lamps on all cars are combination tail
and stop lamps.
E a c h lamp has two bulbs, one
3-candle-power
for the tail light, and one
15-
candle-power, which serves for both the stop and
back-up lights.
T h e larger bulb is lighted by the
switch on the brake pedal bracket for the stop
light, and by a new switch on the transmission for
backing.
The rear lamp is fitted with a special ruby lens
with a reflex area around the outer
edge for
reflecting the light of an approaching car when
the rear lights are out.
Incorporated in the center
of this ruby lens is a special blue lens directly in
line w i t h the 15-candle-power bulb.
T h i s blue
lens is illegal in California ancl cars shipped into
this state are provided with a small ruby lens
instead of the blue lens.
T h e blending of the blue light with the ruby-
produces a brilliant hue which attracts immediate
attention.
T h e lower half of the blue portion of
the lens is thinner in section than the upper half,
p r o v i d i n g ample illumination for backing.
