Calibration and print quality

The printer automatically performs printer calibration regularly to maintain high print quality.
Besides automatic calibration, additional printer and media family calibration is required.
IMPORTANT
For optimal print quality, always complete the following steps.
1. Printer calibration

Printer calibration
To ensure high print quality, perform printer calibration regularly. The printer notifies you when it
is time to perform printer calibration. Printer calibration consists of the following two steps.
• [Shading correction].
The [Shading correction] procedure assures consistent color planes on the print.
• [Auto gradation adjustment]
The [Auto gradation adjustment] procedure is a precise calibration of the printer's gradation,
density, and color settings. A test print is used to scan and to correct the irregularities
automatically. The [Quick auto gradation adjustment] procedure only corrects gradation.
In exceptional cases, you can perform these steps separately.
Media family calibration
To ensure high print quality for every media you use, perform media family calibration for each
new media that will be applied.
A media family is a set of media with the same output profile (one per halftone) and calibration.
By default, the controller provides the media families coated and uncoated. An expert can create
a new media family for a specific group of media. A media family has one output profile for the
following halftones.
• [Normal]
• [Fine]
• [Error diffusion]
CMYK curve adjustment
Printer calibration results in a calibrated CMYK curve for a media family/halftone combination. In
exceptional cases, you can also apply manually adjusted CMYK curves to the following modes.
• [Basic mode]
• [Advanced mode]
