Access Methods

The KPA may be accessed directly by using a physical address or indirectly through a
backup KPA in a redundant configuration using a virtual address.
6.6.1

Direct Access

KPAs may be directly accessed by the RS-232 interface or by the RS-485 interface in a
buss configuration.

Indirect Access

KPAs in Redundancy Mode may be addressed indirectly by adding a virtual address to
the backup KPA's physical address. The virtual address corresponds to the KPA's
position in the redundant subsystem. The backup KPA recognizes the virtual address and
executes the command via the dedicated serial link between itself and the targeted KPA.
This addressing mode is provided to reduce cabinet wiring complexity by allowing
remote access to either both KPAs (in a 1:1 redundant subsystem) or all three KPAs (in a
1:2 redundant subsystem) using a single RS-232 or RS-485 connection to the backup
KPA.
Note: Due to memory limitations, virtual addressing is not fully functional in a KPA 1:2
system. Contact the factory for specific information. Virtual addressing is fully functional
in a KPA 1:1 system.
In this control network, the KPA is paralleled on a common RS-485 cable, and has a unique
physical address. Only one RS-485 port is required on the system's monitor and control
computer.
For RS-232 control, a direct RS-232 cable connection is made to each KPA to be accessed.
If an external Monitor and Control Computer is used, one RS-232 port per KPA is required.
