Chapter 9—Strip Module
9.1 Strip Module
Description
Strip module
54
Strip module is a somewhat inadequate name for this sensor, which detects
if a label or similar has been removed after printing and—if not—holds
the printing of next label until the present one has been removed. It works
equally well when the media is manually torn off after printing as when
the labels are automatically separated from the liner. The latter requires an
optional rewinder module (see Chapter 8).
The strip module (also called "label taken sensor") is a standard feature on
all EasyCoder PD4 printers that have a LCD display. It cannot be fi tted on
the model without display, where it is replaced by a similar plastic mould-
ing without any sensor.
The strip module is normally folded up into the side of the front panel
(see Chapter 2.2) but can be folded down to a horizontal position after
the right hand door has been opened. In the horizontal position, it detects
labels approximately 15 mm (0.59 in) from the inner edge of the media
path and approximately 22 mm (0.86 in) in front of the printhead's dot
line.
The strip module can not be used when a paper cutter is installed.
The strip module consists of a plastic housing which is hinged on a pin
protruding from the inside of the panel module. The housing contains a
circuit board with a light-emitting diode (LED) and a light-sensitive sensor.
The sensors are connected to CN12 (marked "strip") on the main board.
When the light from the LED is refl ected back from the back side of a
label and hits the sensor, a label present condition is assumed. If no light is
detected, a label taken condition is assumed. Thus, the sensor is somewhat
sensitive to the ambient light conditions and to the refl ection properties of
the back side of the media.
