Possible Causes of Condition
• Need to slow air intake
• Extremely dry wood
Possible Causes of Condition
No:
• Damper not fully open
• Chimney obstruction
• Not enough kindling and/or fuel to establish
draft
• Inadequate combustion air
Yes:
• Fire too close to front
• Competition with exhaust devices
Possible Causes of Condition
• No: Down draft or negative pressure
• Yes: Negative pressure from exhaust fans
and/or house stack effect.
• No: Creosote odor
• Yes: Damper closed too early

Solutions
Add glass doors.
Mix in less seasoned wood after fi re established.
Solutions
Open damper; check and clean chimney if needed; use adequate
kindling and fuel; open glass doors or open window, check for
need for balanced air make-up.
Build fi re farther back. Do not use exhaust fans during startup
and/or check for need for balanced air make-up system.
Solutions
Close the damper at end of burn.
Check for need for glass doors. Check for need for balanced air
make-up system or raising chimney.
Have chimney cleaned.
Wait until fi re completely out before closing damper.
