Eng ine oi l pressure
Illuminates in red when ig nition is switched
on. Extinguishes after engine is started.
Ca n illuminate intermittently when idling
with hot engine; must ex tinguish when
engine sp eed is increased.
If it illuminates during driving;
engine oil pressure may be dangerously
low, interrupting engine lubrication and
resulting in damage to the engine and /or
locking of the driving wheels:
z Move out of the flow of tra ffic as quickly
as possible w ithout impeding other
vehicles,
z Depress clutch,
z Move g earshift lever to neutral
(automatic tra nsmission to N ),
z Switch off ignition.

Warning
When the engine is off, consid erably
greater force w ill b e required for braking
and steering.
Do not rem ov e key until vehicle has come
to a standstill, otherwise the steering
column loc k could eng age unex pectedly.
Check engine oil level before consulting
a workshop. If the oil level is low , top up
using the specified engine oil - see pa ges
188, 206, 210.
If the oil level is normal, ha ve a workshop
check the vehic le's lubricating system.

Alternator
Illum inates in red when ignition is switched
on. Ex tinguishes after engine is sta rted.
If it illum ina tes during driving:
stop v ehicle and sw itc h off engine. The
battery is not being charged and the
engine c ooling m ay be interrupted. The
brake serv o unit may cease to be effec tiv e.
Interrupt your journey imm ediately.
Remove key and check drive belt condition
and tensioning b efore consulting a
work shop.

Exhaust emi ssions
Illuminates in y ellow when ignition is
switched on. Extinguishes after eng ine is
started. Can illuminate briefly w hen
driving; this is normal and does not
indicate a system fa ult.
If it illuminates w hen the engine is running;
fault in em ission control system .
The permitted em ission limits m ay b e
exceeded. Fuel econom y and vehicle
driveability m ay be imp aired.
The control indicator also illum ina tes if
there is a fault in the d iesel particle filter 3 .
C onsult a workshop as soon as possible.
If it flashes when the engine is running;
for a fault that can lead to d estruction of
the catalytic converter, see pa ge 130.
