Control Strings - Syntax Rules

Use the Control Strings Definitions dialog to write custom control strings for non-IR controlled devices.
The syntax rules for Control Strings in VA are as follows:

To Define Custom Control Strings For A (Non IR-controlled) Device

1. Select File > Control Strings Definition > New Definition to open the New Control Strings
Definition dialog. Use this dialog to define a new control string for one or more a specific functions,
for a selected device type. The drop-down menu in this dialog allows you to select the device type
that you want to define a new control string for.
2. Select a device type and click OK to proceed to the Control Strings Definition dialog.
3. In the Properties window (FIG. 65):

a. Enter the name of the device's Manufacturer (in the Manufacturer field).
b. Enter the model name/number of the device (in the Model field).
c. Review the Packet Format and Connection properties, and edit as required: To change any of
these properties to a setting other than the default, click inside the Value column for any item to
select from a drop-down menu of values supported for each property (FIG. 66).
4. The Functions window is pre-populated with list of functions supported for the selected device type
(FIG. 67) .

VA (v1.0) supports ASCII text only for control strings when typing into the String Value text
fields for each Function. Hex support in VA is limited to the set of pre-determined Headers
and Terminators available for selection in the Properties window of the Control Strings
Definition dialog.
VA treats all control string text as if it was enclosed in single quotes. Do not include the single
quotes in your text.
ASCII strings can have from 0 to 255 characters.
