9.3 Using the S7-1500 as an OPC UA server
Activating the standard SIMATIC Server interface
If the "Activate Standard SIMATIC server interface" option is selected, the OPC UA server of
the CPU provides the enabled PLC tags and server methods to the clients, as is specified in
the OPC UA specification.
This option is selected in the default setting.
Leave the option selected so that OPC UA clients can automatically connect to the OPC UA
server of the CPU and exchange data.
In addition to the standard SIMATIC server interface you have the option to import and to
activate additional server interfaces, see Using OPC UA information models (Page 203).
Support for OPC UA clients with OPC UA V1.03 and older
The OPC UA specification (<= V1.03) defines mechanisms in order to read out data type
definitions, for example for user-defined structures (UDTs), from a server by means of the
TypeDictionaries.
For the start of delivery of STEP 7 Professional (TIA Portal) V15 and S7-1500 CPUs with
firmware version 2.5 the OPC UA specification existed as a Release Candidate V1.04 . This
updated version of the OPC UA specification allows, for example, higher-performance
access to structures.
Access to data (for example structures) with clients that use the OPC UA specification
V1.04
Access via mechanisms that are defined in the OPC UA specification V1.04 is not
supported by S7-1500 CPUs with firmware 2.5! Clients that use these mechanisms to
access data of the OPC UA Servers possibly operate with incorrect values.

General settings of the OPC UA server

TCP port for OPC UA
By default, OPC UA uses TCP port 4840.
You can, however, select a different port. Entries from 1024 to 49151 are possible.
You must, however, make sure that there are no conflicts with other applications.
OPC UA clients must use the selected port when establishing a connection.
In the example below, port 48400 is selected:
