11. Ensure that the small handle is in the raised position and the microprocessor retainer is fully open.
12. Remove the protective cover that protects the gold contacts of the new microprocessor.
13. Note the orientation of the new microprocessor. Hold the new microprocessor by its edges and align
the notches

on it with the tabs
microprocessor straight down into the microprocessor socket.
Note: The small triangle
indicator. The new microprocessor is in the correct orientation when this indicator points to the beveled

corner
of the microprocessor socket.

14. Close the microprocessor retainer and lock it into position with the small handle to secure the new
microprocessor in the socket.
15. Install the heat sink. See "Replacing the heat sink" on page 122.
16. Reconnect all cables that were disconnected from the system board.
17. Install the system-board shield. See "Replacing the system-board shield" on page 102.

Replacing the system board

Attention: Do not open your computer or attempt any repair before reading and understanding the Chapter
1 "Read this first: Important safety information" on page 1.
Note: Each computer has a unique Vital Product Data (VPD) code stored in the nonvolatile memory on
the system board. After you replace the system board, the VPD must be updated. To update the VPD,
see "Updating the BIOS" on page 75.
To replace the system board, do the following:
