1. Remove any media from the drives and turn off all connected devices and the computer. Then,
disconnect all power cords from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the
computer.
2. Place a soft, clean towel or cloth on the desk or surface. Hold the sides of your computer and gently lay
it down so that the screen is against the surface and the cover is facing up.
3. Remove the computer stand. See "Replacing the computer stand" on page 96.
4. Remove the computer cover. See "Removing the computer cover" on page 101.
5. Remove the system-board shield. See "Replacing the system-board shield" on page 102.
6. Locate the heat sink. See "Computer components" on page 33.
7. Loosen the four screws that secure the heat sink to the system board in the following sequence, and
then lift out the heat sink to remove it from the system board:
a. Partially remove screw
b. Partially remove screw
Notes:
• Carefully remove the four screws from the system board to avoid any possible damage to the system
board. The four screws cannot be removed from the heat sink.
• Do not touch the thermal grease while handling the heat sink.

8. Insert the tab

of the new heat sink into the hole in the chassis. Then, tighten the four screws to secure
the new heat sink and fan assembly in the following sequence. Do not over-tighten the screws.
