Procedure 2
The purpose of this procedure is to determine, by creating a temporary load, if the power
supply unit is supplying the appropriate voltages. The power supply unit only supplies
voltages when a load is attached. To perform this procedure, begin with Check 1 and
continue as instructed.
Check 1
(A) Create a short between pins 14 (green) and 15 (black/ground) on the P1
connector. (B) Measure to determine if the correct voltages are present in all pins
at connector P1 through connector P6.
If the correct voltages are present at these connectors, perform Check 3. If
correct voltages are not present at these connectors, perform Check 2.
Check 2
(A) Replace the power supply (refer to section 4.3.). (B) Perform Procedure 1.
Check 3
(A) Remove the short between pins 14 and 15 of the P1 connector.
(B) Disconnect the AC power cord from the computer. (C) Plug the P1
connector into the system board at J6M1. (D) Reconnect the AC power cord to
the system. (E) Verify that the computer's Power button is operating properly
(refer to the Switch Troubleshooting Process). (F) Turn the computer on using
the Power button on the front of the computer (See Figure 2-2 for computer
switch (button) locations). (G) Measure to determine if the correct voltages are
present in all pins at connector P1 through connector P6.
If the correct voltages are present at these connectors, perform Procedure 3. If
correct voltages are not present, perform Check 4.
Check 4
(A) Disconnect P1 from the system board. (B) Replace the system board (refer to
section 4.9.). (C) Perform Procedure 1.
Procedure 3
The purpose of this procedure is to ensure that the power supply operates properly under
load. To do this, all devices (loads) must be connected to the power supply one at a time. To
perform this procedure, begin with Check 1 and continue as instructed.
Check 1
(A) Turn the computer off. (B) Connect the P6 connector to the FDD. (C) Turn
the computer back on. (D) Measure to determine if the correct voltages are
present at the P6 connector (12V yellow/5V red).
If the correct voltages are present at this connector, perform Check 2. If the
voltages are not correct, perform Check 3.
Check 2
(A) Inspect the FDD data cable to ensure it is not damaged. (B) If the cable is
damaged, replace it with a new cable (refer to section 4.1.3.2.). (C) Connect the
FDD data cable to J9K1 on the system board. (D) Measure to determine if the
correct voltages are present in all pins at connector P1 through connector P6.
If the correct voltages are present at these connectors, perform Procedure 4. If
the voltages are not correct, perform Check 3.
