Chapter Seven: Data Connectivity

This chapter discusses the different types of data connectivity available with the Nextel Connection Manager.

Packet Data Connection

Packet data allows you to access the Internet, send and receive e-mail, and transfer files over the packet data
network, using standard IP applications. Packet data transmits packets (blocks) of data at high speeds. The data
is sent over the Nextel Wireless Network. Packet data compresses your files, which cuts down on the amount of
time it takes to send e-mails and load Internet pages. A Nextel packet-data connection is pre-configured in the
Nextel Connection Manager software.
Connecting via Packet Data
You can run any standard TCP/IP application during a packet data session. Please note that during an active
packet data session, any software configured for use with other service providers may need to be reconfigured for
use with your own service provider.
When connecting over the Nextel network, the Nextel Connection Manager software is configured to use a
compression client, included in the software package. The compression software will increase the usability of
your connection by compressing pictures and other large files. It will also increase the download speed. For
more information on how to configure the compression client, please refer to he Configuration section of Chapter
Nine: Settings.

WiFi Connection

A WiFi connection allows you to access the Internet, send and receive e-mail, and transfer files over the packet
data network, using standard IP applications. A Nextel WiFi connection is pre-configured in the Nextel
Connection Manager software. The WiFi connection works at speeds higher than those available with packet
data connection. Data transmitted over the Nextel WiFi network is not compressed.
You can scan for existing WiFi networks using the WiFi Scanner. To search for the nearest Nextel WiFi HotSpot,
please use the HotSpot locator. For more information on using the WiFi Scanner and the HotSpot locator, please
refer to the HotSpot Locator section of Chapter Nine: Settings.
