Step 7: Reset and/or replace the cartridge
reset mechanism
Brother uses a "page counting" mechanism (a
combination of gears, spring, and "flag") to report to
the printer an estimate of the amount of toner
remaining in the cartridge (whether full, empty, or
somewhere in-between.)
Before we begin the refill procedure we will address
the components of the reset mechanism that either
have to be removed or replaced.
Without properly resetting/addressing these
mechanisms, even after the cartridge has been
refilled the cartridge would still appear to the printer
as being empty resulting in a false "toner low" or
"toner empty" message.
Although the TN starter, TN820, and TN850 toner
cartridges are fundamentally the same, each requires
a slightly different process to reset the page
counting mechanism.
The TN STARTER cartridge won't have a black, gray,
or white reset gear nor the small spring and a totally
different toner hopper plug (Figure 7A).
The TN820 and TN850 cartridge will have a black or
gray reset gear and a spring (Figure 7B).
The TN880 cartridge will have a gray reset gear and
a spring (Figure 7C).
The process of completing the refilling and gear reset
procedure will be the same for all cartridge versions
with the exception that you will be adding an
additional gear to the TN STARTER and TN820
cartridges to allow the printer to recognize them as
the higher-yeild cartridge.
Additional gear and spring will be provided for within
the ReChargX™ RX417XX premium print toner refill
kit.
The process for the TN850 & TN880 will be the same
with the exception that you will be resetting the
present gears already on the end of the cartridge.
