  • Page 2 Step 1: Prepare your work surface Included in the ReChargX RX417XX premium print toner refill kit is a sheet of newsprint (Figure 1). Unfold the sheet and lay it across your work surface. The newsprint keeps your work surface clean and is discarded after completing the refilling process.
  • Page 3 Step 4: Prepare the cartridge for refilling Position the cartridge on your work surface so the handle (A) is facing toward you and the developer roller (B) is facing away from you (Figure 4).   • Page 4 Step 6: Remove the cartridge end cap Position the cartridge on your work surface so the black plastic end cap (which covers the internal gears of the cartridge) is facing upward and the handle of the cartridge is on the right-hand side (Figure 6-1). You now have access to the two screws which secure the end cap to the cartridge (highlighted by the arrows in Figure 6-1).
  • Page 5 Step 7: Reset and/or replace the cartridge reset mechanism Brother uses a “page counting” mechanism (a combination of gears, spring, and “flag”) to report to the printer an estimate of the amount of toner remaining in the cartridge (whether full, empty, or somewhere in-between.)

  • Page 8 Step 9: Remove the remaining Brother toner Prior to adding “fresh” toner, we must remove the residual “old” toner. On the first refill of your Brother toner cartridge, the Figure 8-8: Removing the toner hopper plug new toner should not be combined with whatever quantity of Brother toner remains in the hopper.
  • Page 9 Step 10: Add the ReChargX™ RX417XX premium print toner to the toner hopper Before starting the toner hopper refilling process (and after verifying the bottle cap is screwed firmly in place), gently rock or shake the bottle back-and-forth several times to ensure the toner will flow smoothly (the toner can settle and compact during shipping).
  • Page 10 Step 12: Clean the area around the toner hopper opening The area around the toner hopper opening must be cleaned with the toner grabber cloth before the new plug is inserted (Figure 12).   • Page 11 Step 14: Re-install the small black helical gear Locate and re-install the small black helical gear (F) over the metal post (Figure 14).   • Page 13 Hold the reset gear by one finger while doing the same to the spring. Use your thumb to push the long arm of the spring up and over the plastic extensions of the reset gear (Figure 19-3). Figure 19-3: Setting the spring into place Once the spring is over the plastic extensions, it will fit within a ridge on the reset gear (Figure 19-4).
