Digital thermometer (SCH420)
Intended use
The digital thermometer is for domestic/home use. The digital thermometer measures
your or your child's body temperature in the rectum, under the tongue or in the armpit.
6
For children younger than three years we advise you to use the digital thermometer only
in the rectum.
Important safety information
Read this important information carefully before you use the device and save it for future
reference.
Warnings
9
- Keep the device out of reach of infants, children or pets. These products contain
items with sharp edges and small parts. Inhalation or swallowing of small parts can
be a choking hazard.
- Risk of swallowing batteries! The digital thermometer contains a button battery. If
the button battery is swallowed, it can cause severe internal burns in just 2 hours and
can lead to death. Battery compartment cover of the digital thermometer must be
replaced properly if removed.
- Clean and dry all products before and after each use (see ‚Cleaning'). After using the
digital thermometer rectally or in the armpit, do not use it for oral measurement for
hygienic reasons, not even after cleaning.
- Batteries may explode if exposed to high temperatures or fire. Do not store or leave
12
any product in direct sunlight or near any source of heat.
- Never attempt to recharge the battery.
- The thermometer is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced
physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless
they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the thermometer
by a person responsible for their safety.
- Always check the device for damage before use. Do not use the device when
damaged, this could result in injuries.
- Do not take apart, repair or change any part of the device at any time, this could
result in injuries.
- Do not use the digital thermometer near strong electric or magnetic fields, for
example magnets, radio transmitters or microwave ovens. This could cause
15
measurement errors and reduce the essential performance of the digital thermometer.
- Do not use the digital thermometer within 30 cm (12 inch) of an RF device (e.g.
mobile phone, baby monitor, DECT telephone etc.). This could cause measurement
errors and reduce the essential performance of the digital thermometer.
Cautions
- The digital thermometer is suitable for use at room temperatures between 10 °C
18
(50 °F) and 40 °C (104 °F). When used outside this temperature range, accuracy of
the measurement is not guaranteed.
- Do not drop the digital thermometer or expose it to shocks, this might damage the
device and lead to inaccurate measurements.
- Do not bend or disassemble the tip of the digital thermometer.
- Do not use the digital thermometer if the display shows a dot on the bottom right of
the screen. This means that the battery is low and therefore measurements will be
inaccurate.
- Do not bite the metal tip while you measure temperature orally. Prevent your child
from biting the metal tip while you measure temperature orally. Simply place the tip
under the tongue.
21
Electromagnetic fields (EMF)
This Philips device complies with all applicable standards and regulations regarding
exposure to electromagnetic fields.
Measuring temperature of children under the age of
three years
Rectal measurement
Note: Measure the temperature in the rectum for the most accurate result when
measuring the temperature of children under the age of three years.
1 Remove the protection cap from the digital thermometer. Make sure that the metal
sensor of the flexible tip is firmly attached to the digital thermometer.
2 Switch on the digital thermometer by pressing the on/off button. All display items
light up briefly. Wait until the display shows 'Lo' (see ‚Last temperature recall').
3 Put water-based lubricant on the tip of the digital thermometer.
4 Lay the child on its stomach or its side.
5 With one hand, separate the child's buttocks. With the other hand, gently slide the
tip of the digital thermometer no more than 12 mm (0.5 inch) into the rectum. Make
sure that the metal probe of the thermometer is fully inserted. If you detect any
resistance, stop right away. Do not push the flexible tip too far into the rectum.
6 Firmly hold the child to prevent it from turning while the digital thermometer is in the
rectum.
7 Keep the digital thermometer in place until the °C/°F indication stops flashing and the
digital thermometer beeps.
Number of beeps
1 beep per second
3 beeps per second
8 Remove the digital thermometer and read the display. If the display shows 'Lo'
(temperature is <32.0 °C/90.0 °F) or 'Hi' (temperature is >42.9 °C/109.9 °F)
continuously after the measurement, the digital thermometer cannot measure the
temperature. Switch off the thermometer and switch it on again. Refer to step 5
above to repeat the measurement.
Note: The thermometer only indicates fever. It also beeps once per second
when your child's temperature is below normal. Results may vary based on the
individual.
9 Switch off and clean the digital thermometer after each use (see ‚Cleaning').
It switches off automatically after 10 minutes.
What it means
No fever detected (<37.8 °C/100 °F)
Possible fever detected
(>37.8 °C/100 °F)
