ON-VEHICLE SERVICE
VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS)
ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
1) Disconnect negative (–) cable at battery.
2) Hoist vehicle and set transmission in neutral.
3) Remove combination meter from instrument panel and discon-
nect its couplers.
4) Connect voltmeter positive lead to terminal (V/Y) and negative
lead to terminal (B/O).
5) Connect negative (–) cable to battery and then turn the ignition
switch on position.
6) Turn front tire slowly by hands. Voltmeter should indicate deflec-
tion 0 – 1 V and 8 – 14 V a few times while tire is turned one revo-
lution.
If check result is not satisfactory, repair referring to the following
table.
NOTE:
D Vehicle speed sensor can not be checked by itself.
D Terminal voltage is affected by the battery voltage, con-
firm that it is 11 V or more when the ignition switch is
turned on position.
Possible cause
IG. fuse blown
B/O wire is open
Speedometer faulty or V/Y wire is short (In case
of checked by disconnect VSS coupler)
VSS faulty
V/Y wire is open
VSS faulty or VSS ground is open
VSS power supply is open
Signal rotor on differential case faulty

Measure
Replace and check for short.
Repair.
Replace or repair.
Replace VSS.
Repair.
Replace or repair.
Repair.
Check signal rotor.
