Step 2: Choose Shooting and Focus Modes

Select i or j mode.
To take photographs without the flash, rotate
the mode dial to j. Otherwise, rotate the mode
dial to i.

Select autofocus.
Rotate the focus-mode selector to AF
(autofocus).

Step 3: Check Camera Settings

Check settings in the control panel. The default settings for i and j mode are listed
below.

If the subject is poorly lit, the flash will pop up
o automatically when the shutter-release button is
pressed halfway and fire when the picture is taken.
j (flash off ) Flash will not fire even when lighting is poor.
NORM Record JPEG images at a compression ratio of
(JPEG Normal) roughly 1 : 8. Ideal for snapshots.
L (Large) Images are 4,288 × 2,848 pixels in size.
8 One picture is taken each time the shutter-release
(Single frame) button is pressed.
The camera automatically selects single-servo
autofocus if the subject is stationary, continuous-

servo autofocus if the subject is in motion. No
(Auto select)
picture will be taken if the camera is unable to
focus.
Auto-area The camera automatically selects the focus point.
