Chapter 3: Indoor installation reference

This chapter provides an overview and hardware description for the indoor WLAN AP 8120 and AP 8120
with external antenna.
Access Point 8120 and Access Point 8120 with External
Antenna overview
The WLAN 8100 supports two types of indoor access points:
• AP 8120 is an indoor AP that is currently supported by the WLAN 8100. The AP 8120
does not support connecting external antenna.
• AP 8120 with External Antenna. This is an indoor AP with one or two external antennas.
This model of AP requires that the external antenna, or antennas, be attached for the AP
to be operational.
Access Point 8120
The Avaya Access Point 8120 (AP 8120) is the wireless access portion of the Avaya WLAN
8100 Series solution. The AP 8120 provides 802.11a+n b/g+n wireless connectivity through
six dual-band 2.4/5.0 GHz antennas; three dedicated to 2.4 GHz use and three dedicated to
5.0 GHz . The AP 8120 is designed for use with the Wireless Controller 8180 (WC 8180). The
WC 8180 coordinates and load balances domains of access points in the network.
The AP 8120 communicates with the WC 8180 using a standard Category 5 (CAT-5) or higher
10/100/1000Mbps twisted pair Ethernet cable. The AP 8120 is intended for indoor installations
only. The AP 8120 does accept the connection of external antennas.
The AP 8120 requires hardware installation only. Access point configuration is performed on
the WC 8180 after installation and connection to the network.
Access Point 8120 with External Antenna
The AP 8120 with External Antenna is an indoor plenun rated AP that supports the attachment
of external antennas. The antennas connect to the AP 8120 with External Antenna using three
3–ft extension cables that attach through holes on either side of the AP. The AP 8120 with
External Antenna offers increased radio power and more pervasive access, regardless of the
location of the user.
You configure both the AP 8120 and the AP 8120 with External Antenna similarly, however,
the AP 8120 with External Antenna supports several new configuration parameters (such as
the antenna type and the length of extension cable used) specific to AP 8120 with External
Antenna model.
