Selects the background color or picture on the
TV screen in stop mode or while playing an
audio CD or MP3 audio track.
The default setting is underlined.

Selects the black level (setup level) for the video
signals output from the jacks other than
COMPONENT VIDEO OUT.

Selects the black level (setup level) for the video
signals output from the COMPONENT VIDEO
OUT jacks.
"BLACK LEVEL (COMPONENT OUT)"
setting is not available when the system outputs
progressive signal.
The default setting is underlined.

The jacket picture (still picture)
appears in the background, but
only when the jacket picture is
already recorded on the disc (CD-
EXTRA, etc.). If the disc does not
contain a jacket picture, the
"GRAPHICS" picture appears.
A preset picture stored in the
system appears.
The background color is blue.
The background color is black.
Sets the black level of the output
signal to the standard level.
Lowers the standard black level.
Use this when the picture becomes
too white.
Sets the black level of the output
signal to the standard level.
Raise the standard black level.
Use this when the picture becomes
too black.
x 4:3 OUTPUT (except for MHC-GNZ5D)
This setting is effective only when:
– you set "TV TYPE" in "SCREEN SETUP" to
"16:9" (page 39).
– the type of signal output from the system is set
to "PROGRESSIVE AUTO" or
"PROGRESSIVE VIDEO" (page 40).
Adjust this to watch 4:3 aspect ratio progressive
signals. If you can change the aspect ratio on
your progressive format (525p/625p)
compatible TV, change the setting on your TV,
not the system.
The default setting is underlined.
FULL
Select this when you can change
the aspect ratio on your TV.
NORMAL
Select this when you cannot
change the aspect ratio on your
TV. Shows a 16:9 aspect ratio
signal with black bands on left and
right sides of the image.

To change the type of signal
output from the system
— PROGRESSIVE (except for MHC-GNZ5D)
Progressive is the method for displaying TV
images which reduces flickering, and sharpens
the image. To display using this method, you
need to connect to a TV that accepts progressive
signals.
Press DVD and DISPLAY on the unit at the
same time.
Each time you press the buttons, the display
changes as follows:
PROGRESSIVE AUTO* t PROGRESSIVE
VIDEO* t NORMAL (INTERLACE)
* "P AUTO" or "P VIDEO" appears in the front panel
display when the system outputs progressive signals.
