5-5. Engine Prestart Checks

Check all engine fluids daily.

Automatic warning and shutdown indi-
cators are displayed on the Engine Dis-
play. See Section 12 for engine display
information.
Engine must be cold and on a level surface.
Automatic shutdown system stops engine if
oil pressure is too low, engine temperature
is too high, coolant level is too low or fuel is
low.

This unit has a low oil pressure shut-
down switch. However, some condi-
tions may cause engine damage before
the engine shuts down. Check oil level
often and do not use the oil pressure
shutdown system to monitor oil level.

NOTICE − Follow run-in procedure
in engine manual. If unburned fuel
and oil collect in exhaust pipe, see
Section 13.

NOTICE − Diesel engines in MILLER equip-
ment are meant to operate optimally at mod-
erate to rated load. Using light or no load for
extended periods of time may cause wet-
stacking or engine damage.
Follow run-in procedure in engine manual.
If unburned fuel and oil collect in exhaust
pipe, see Section 13.
Fuel
NOTICE − Do not use gasoline. Gasoline
will damage engine.
Add fresh diesel fuel before starting (see
engine maintenance label for fuel specifica-
tions). Leave filler neck empty to allow room
for expansion.

After fueling, check oil with unit on level sur-

face. If oil is not up to full mark on dipstick,
add oil (see maintenance label).

Check coolant level in coolant overflow
tank. Coolant should touch bottom of neck
pipe.

To improve cold weather starting:
Keep battery in good condition. Store
battery in warm area.
Use fuel formulated for cold weather
(diesel fuel can gel in cold weather).
Contact local fuel supplier for fuel in-
formation.
Use correct grade oil for cold weather
(see Section 8-1).
