Replacement and Adjustment of Rear Axle Ring Gear and Drive Pinion

have, however, made it possible to produce rear axle gears t h a t
can be satisfactorily serviced in the
field.

W h i l e the practice of replacing the differential carrier
assembly has been d i s c o n t i n u e d o n these car models i t is s t i l l

I n case the rear axle gears need re-
p l a c i n g o r adjusting o n V - 1 6 cars, the entire differential
carrier assembly s h o u l d be replaced a n d the o l d one returned
to the factory o n the regular exchange basis as i n the past.
W h e n the r i n g gear a n d d r i v e p i n i o n are replaced o n the V - 8
a n d V - 1 2 cars, the double-row b a l l b e a r i n g o n the front end
of the d r i v e p i n i o n shaft s h o u l d also be replaced.

ing, whenever the gears are w o r n sufficiently to require re-
p l a c e m e n t , i f the b e a r i n g is n o t replaced at the same t i m e the
gear replacement is made.
It is also advisable t o replace the cork gasket o n the retainer
for the front p i n i o n b e a r i n g a n d , i n cars w h i c h have the late
t y p e axle o i l retainer, the felt washer s h o u l d be replaced.
I n
this c o n n e c t i o n , whenever the axle is d o w n for inspection o r
replacement of gears, the retainer nut s h o u l d be inspected a n d
the g r o o v e d t y p e installed whenever the p l a i n t y p e is found.
C o m p l e t e instructions for replacing a n d adjusting the rear
axle gears o n V - 8 a n d V - 1 2 cars are g i v e n b e l o w :
R e m o v a l a n d Disassembly
The replacement of the rear axle ring gear a n d d r i v e p i n i o n
necessarily
requires
the
removal a n d
disassembly o f
the
differential gear assembly.
1 o remove this u n i t , it is necessary
first to remove the rear axle assembly from under the car.
T h e n the axle shafts, the torque tube, the propeller shaft, the
differential cover a n d reinforcement plate are removed, after
w h i c h the differential gear assembly is d i s m o u n t e d o r taken
off of the differential carrier.
See b i g . 1, P l a t e 5 A .
T h e differential gear assembly is disassembled i n the follow-
i n g order:
1. R e m o v e caps for differential side bearings a n d t a k e o u t
adjuster rings.
2. R e m o v e differential u n i t .
3. R e m o v e r i n g gear from differential case a n d gear m o u n t .
4. R e m o v e d r i v e p i n i o n , bearings, front bearing retainer

a n d d r i v i n g o u t this shaft.
It is not necessary t o remove these
gears, however, for r e p l a c i n g the r i n g gear a n d d r i v e p i n i o n .

the r i n g gear.
A convenient w a y of m a k i n g this test is t o i n -

T h e hubs of the differential side gears s h o u l d have no more
t h a n .005 i n . r a d i a l clearance i n the differential case.
E n d -
p l a y i n these gears s h o u l d not exceed .020 i n .
T h e t w o differential p i n i o n gears should h a v e a clearance of
not more t h a n .010 i n . o n the p i n i o n shaft a n d n o t more t h a n
.020 in b a c k l a s h w i t h the side gears.
R e a s s e m b l y a n d I n s t a l l a t i o n
Reassembly of the differential gear assembly is a c c o m p l i s h e d
i n the following o r d e r :
1. Install ball bearings, bearing spacer, front bearing re-
tainer a n d bearing retaining nuts o n d r i v e p i n i o n shaft, being
sure to get the retainer back of the front bearing a n d w i t h this
b e a r i n g fitted i n the c u p of the retainer.
