The LO setting warms the seatback and cushion until the seat approximates body temperature. On colder days, the HI setting heats the seats an even higher temperature.
  • Page 24 Head Restraints ! ! - Slide the head restraint up or down closest to the top of your ears. This position reduces the chance of a neck injury in a crash. The head restraints tilt forward and rearward also. SAFETYBELTS: THEY’RE FOR EKIERYONE This part the manual tells you how to use safety belts properly.
  • Page 25 This figure lights up as a reminder to buckle up. (See “Safety Belt Reminder Light” in the Index.) In many states and Canadian provinces, the law says to wear safety belts. Here’s why: They work. You never know if you’ll be in a crash. If you do have a crash, you don’t know if it will be a bad one.
  • Page 26 why Safety Belts Work When you ride in or on anything, you go as fast as it goes.
  • Page 27 For example, if the bike is going 10 mph (16 km/h), so is the child. When the bike hits the block, it stops. But the child keeps going! Take the simplest “vehicle.” Suppose it’s just a seat on wheels.
  • Page 28 Put someone on Get it up to speed. Then stop the “vehicle.” The rider doesn’t stop.
  • Page 29 The person keeps going until stopped by something. In a real vehicle, it could be the windshield or the instrument panel...
  • Page 30 With safety belts, you slow down as to stop. You stop over more distance, and your strongest bones take the forces. That’s why safety belts make such good sense. HERE ARE QUESTIONS lMANyPEOPLE ASKABOUT SAFETYBELTS --AND THE ANSWERS Won’t I be trapped in the vehicle afleer an accident belt? You could be -- whether you’re wearing a safety belt or not.
  • Page 31 instead of them. Every air bag system ever offered for sale has required the use of safety belts. Even if you’re in a vehicle that has air bags, you still have to buckle up to get the most protection. That’s true not only in frontal collisions, but especially in side and collisions.
  • Page 32 Be aware that there are special things to know about safety belts and children. And there are different rules for smaller children and babies. If a child will be riding in your Cadillac, see the section after this one, called “Children.” Follow those rules for everyone’s protection.
  • Page 33 Lawshoulder Belt The driver has a lap-shoulder belt. Here’s how to wear it properly. 1. Close and lock the door. 2. Adjust the seat (to see how, see “Seats” in the Index) so you can sit up straight.
  • Page 34 4. Push the latch plate into the buckle until it clicks. Pull up on the latch plate to make sure it is secure. If the belt isn’t long enough, see “Safety Belt Extender’’ at the end of this section. Make sure the release button on the buckle is positioned be able to unbuckle the safety belt quickly if you ever had to.
  • Page 35 The lap part of the belt should be worn low and snug on the hips, just touching the thighs. In a crash, this applies force to the strong pelvic bones. And you'd be less likely to slide under the lap belt. If you slid under it, the belt would apply force at your abdomen.
  • Page 36 Shoulder Belt Height Adjuster To move it up or down, squeeze the release handle. When you release the handle, down a little. to make sure it has locked into position.. You can move the adjuster up from a lower position by pushing of the re move it...

For a short person: Use the lower or lower-middle position. AdJUSt that the shoulder portion of the belt is properly positioned your shoulder, away from your face and...
  • Page 38 Shoulder Belt Tightness Adjustment Your Seville has a shoulder belt tightness adjustment feature. If the shoulder belt seems too tight, you can adjust it like this: 1. Sit well back in the seat. 2. Start pulling the shoulder belt out. 3.
  • Page 39 4. Let the belt back all the way. You should hear a slight clicking sound. If you don’t, the adjustment feature won’t set, and you’ll have to start again. 5. Now you can add a small amount of slack. Lean forward slightly, then sit back.
  • Page 40 What’s wrong with this? The shoulder belt is too loose. It won’t give nearly as much protection this way.
  • Page 41 What’s wrong with this? The belt is buckled in the wrong place.
  • Page 42 What’s wrong with this? The shoulder belt is worn under the arm. It should be worn over the shoulder at all times.
  • Page 43 What’s wrong with this? The belt is twisted across the body.
  • Page 44 R E S T M N T SYSTEM (AIR BAGS) This section explains the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR), or “air bag,” system. Your Cadillac has an air bag for both the driver and the right-front passenger. Here’s the most important thing to know:...
  • Page 46 Air Bag Readiness Light There is an air bag readiness light on the instrument panel, which has “INFL REST.” or “INFLATABLE RESTRAINT” on it. The system checks for electrical malfunctions, and the light tells you if there is a problem. Remember, if the air bag readiness light doesn’t come on when you start your vehicle, or stays on, or comes on when you are driving, your air bag system may not work properly.
  • Page 47 How The Air Bag System Works Where is the air bag? The driver’s air bag is in the middle of the steering wheel. The right-front passenger’s air bag is located in the instrument panel on the passenger’s side.
  • Page 48 When is an air bag expected to inflate? The air bag is designed to inflate in moderate to severe frontal or near-frontal crashes. The air bag will only inflate impact is above the designed threshold level. When impacting straight into a wall that does not move or deform, the threshold level for most GM vehicles is between 9 and 15 mph (14 and 23 km/h).
  • Page 49 What makes an air bag inflate? In a frontal or near-frontal impact of sufficient severity, the air bag sensing system detects that the vehicle is suddenly stopping as a result of a crash. The sensing system triggers a chemical reaction of the sodium azide sealed in the inflator.
  • Page 50 In many crashes severe enough to inflate an air bag, windshields are broken by vehicle deformation. Additional windshield breakage may occur in vehicles with passenger air bags because the windshield acts as a reaction surface for the inflating air bag. The air bags are designed to inflate only once.
  • Page 51 Servicing Your Air Bag-Equipped Cadillac Air bags affect how your Cadillac should be serviced. There are parts of the air bag system in several places around your vehicle. You don’t want the system to inflate while someone is working on your vehicle. Your Cadillac dealer and the 1994 Seville Service Manual have information about servicing your vehicle and the air bag system.
  • Page 52 SAFETYBELT USE DURIING PREGNANCY Safety belts work for everyone, including pregnant women. Like all occupants, they are more likely to be seriously injured if they don’t wear safety belts. A pregnant woman should wear a lap-shoulder belt, and the lap portion should be worn as low as possible throughout the pregnancy.
  • Page 53 REAR SEAT PASSENGERS It's very important for rear seat passengers to buckle up! Accident statistics show that unbelted people in the rear seat are hurt more often in crashes than those who are wearing safety belts. Rear passengers who aren't safety belted can be thrown out of the vehicle in a crash.
  • Page 54 If the belt is not long enough, see “Safety Belt Extender” at the end of this section. Make sure the release button on the buckle is positioned so you would be able to unbuckle the safety belt quickly if you ever had to.
  • Page 55 The lap part of the belt should be worn low and snug on the hips, just touching the thighs. In a crash, this applies force to the strong pelvic bones. And you’d be less likely to slide under the lap belt. If you slid under it, the belt would apply force at your abdomen.

  • Page 57 Belt Your vehicle has a rear bench seat, someone can sit in the center position. When you sit in a center seating position, you have a lap safety belt, which has no retractor. To make the belt longer, tilt the latch plate and pull it along the belt.
  • Page 58 Make sure the release button on the buckle is positioned you would be able to unbuckle the safety belt quickly if you ever had to. CHILDREN Everyone in a vehicle needs protection! That includes infants and all size. children smaller than adult In fact, the law in every state in the United States and in every Canadian province says children up to some age must be restrained while in a vehicle.

Here’s why: You’ll be using the lap-shoulder belt. See the earlier section about the top strap if the child restraint has one. Because your vehicle has a right-front passenger’s air bag, always move the seat as far back as it will go before securing a front-facing child restraint.

It’s free. When you go in to order it, take the heaviest coat you will wear, so the extender will be long enough for you.
