Arrangement of Tables
' | ' H E subjects covered in the specification tables are listed in alpha-
betical order in the first column. U n d e r these items will be found
important comments, cautions and references to illustrations and notes.
One class of information in the specification tables consists of limits
for the clearance between parts subject to wear. The limits given are
of two kinds. The " N e w limits are those to be observed when install-
ing new parts. T h e " W o r n limits are those beyond which it is inad-
visable to continue to use the worn parts if quietness of operation and
m a x i m u m performance are to be expected. Some service, although not
the most satisfactory, can of course be obtained from parts worn beyond
these limits.
Arrangement of Illustrations
The illustrated pages are laid out to show as far as possible in picture
form the repair operations, together with the differences and similarities
of the various car units.
Unless otherwise specified all illustrations apply to both the Cadillac
and the LaSalle.

E a c h Cadillac and L a Salle car when shipped carries an engine number
which is also a car serial number. This is the number to be used in
filling out. license and insurance applications and in general reference to
the car. O n Cadillac 3 55-B and L a Saile 345-B cars, this engine num-
ber is stamped on the crankcase near the water inlet on the right-hancl
side. The Cadillac 370-B and 45 2-B have the engine number stamped
on the right-hand side of the crankcase on the generator drive chain
housing.
The various units such as the engine, transmission, steering gear,
etc., also carry unit assembly numbers. These are located as described
in the specification tables. It is important when ordering parts to
give, not only the engine number of the car, hut also the unit assembly
number of the unit to which the part belongs.
