plus or m inus reading recorded in th o u san d th s on the
re a r face o f the pinion, this indicates th a t the pinion
d urin g testing was found to have best tooth contact at a
position v arying from design o r nom in al depth.
In
o rder
to
com pensate
m achining variables, a proced u re o f g aging the carrier
and shim m ing the pin io n has been developed. A fter
g aging
a
carrier,
the
ap p ro p riate shim between the drive p in io n shoulder and
re a r b earin g so th at pin io n d ep th can be adjusted to the
req uired position fo r best to o th contact in each axle
assem bly.
P roper p in io n depth is d eterm in ed w ith P inion Setting
G auge J -2 1777-01.
1.
C lean the housing assem bly an d all gauge parts to
insure accurate m easurem ents.
2.
L ubricate fro n t and re a r p in io n b earings w hich will
be used in final assem bly an d position them in their
respective races in the carrier.
For Passenger Car

J -2 1779-29 m ounted on p relo ad stud J -2 1777-
43.
For Truck Models
b.
J -2 1779-36 m ounted on p relo ad stud J -2 1777-43.
c.
F o r all models, insert stud thro u g h re a r b earin g
and pilot J-2 1777-35, an d thro u g h fro n t b earing
and pilot J -2 1777-42. Install the hex nut until
snug and rotate the bearin g s to m ake sure they
are properly seated. See figures 18B and 19B for
illu stration o f p ro p e r positioning.
4.
Hold the preload stud statio n ary w ith a w rench on
the flats and tighten hex nut. T ig h ten until 20 in.
lbs. o f torque are req u ired to rotate the bearings, as
shown in figure 20B.
5.
M ount the side b earin g discs J -2 1777-45 on the

the
ends o f a rb o r J -2 1777-1, using the step o f the disc
th at corresponds to the bore o f the carrier.
6.
Place the a rb o r and p lu n g e r assem bly into the
carrier, being sure the side b e a rin g discs are seated
properly.
7.
Install the b earin g caps finger tight to hold the discs
from m ovem ent.
8.
Position dial in dicato r J-8001 on the m ou ntin g post
o f the arb o r w ith the contact butto n resting on the
top surface o f the plunger.
9.
Preload the dial in d icato r o n e -h a lf revolution, and
tighten in this position.
10.
Select
the
corresponds to the ring g e a r size and rotate the
plate until the plu ng er rests directly upon th at
button.
11.
Rock the plu ng er rod slowly back and forth across
the button until the dial in d ic a to r reads the greatest
