DIFFERENTIAL CASE
Removal and Disassembly
N O T E:
Before pro ceed ing w ith
steps, it is advisable to check the existing ring
gear to p inion backlash as described u n der
"C hecks and A dju stm en ts". This will indicate
gear or bearing w ear o r an e rro r in backlash
o r pinion depth setting w hich will help in
determ in in g cause o f axle noise. Backlash
should be recorded so th a t if sam e gears are
reused, they m ay be rein stalled at original
lash to avoid changing g e a r tooth contact.
1.
Rem ove screw that retain s differential p inio n shaft,
and rem ove pinion shaft.
2.
Rem ove re ar axle shafts as outlined in the Service
M anual.
3.
Roll out the differential p in io n s and thrust w ashers,
then rem ove side gears and thrust w ashers. M ark
p inions
and
side
reassem bled in orig in al position.
4.
M ark the b earin g caps and housing for reassem bly
in sam e position. Loosen bearing cap bolts. T ap
surface o f b earin g caps to loosen.
CAUTION:
Do not attempt to pry caps off as
this may damage machined face o f caps.
5.
U sing a pry b ar as shown in F ig ure 2B, pry
differential case out o f carrier. Exercise caution in
prying on carrier so th a t gasket sealing surface is
not dam aged. If the b earin gs are preloaded, the
case will suddenly fall free w hen it is pried past a
certain point; therefore, m ake sure case is properly
supported to prevent dam age. T he b earin g caps
m ay be loosely installed, as shown in F igure 2B, to
prevent case from falling.
6.
Place left and rig h t b earin g cups w ith b earin g caps
so th at they m ay be reinstalled in o riginal positions.
Place shim s with ap p ro p ria te cups.

Inspection
1.
Clean all p arts in cleaning solvent; inspect all
bearing cups, races and rollers for scoring, chipping
or evidence o f excessive w ear.
2.
Inspect axle sh aft and side gear splines for evidence
o f excessive wear.
3.
Inspect hypoid ring gear and pinion teeth for
possible scoring, cracking or chipping.
4.
Inspect differential case, pinions, side gears, thrust
w ashers
and
spalling or excessive w ear.
5.
Check fit o f differential side gears in case.
Differential Bearing Replacement
1.
Install Tool J-22888 and A d a p te r Plug J-8 107-4,
assuring puller legs are fitted securely in notches in
case and against b earin g cone, as shown in figure
3B.

Tighten puller screw to rem ove bearing.
3.
Place new b earin g on hub w ith thick side o f inner
race tow ard case and drive into place, using J-22175
and D river H andle J-8092, as show n in figure 4B.

This allows differential case to rest on ad ap ter
instead o f b earin g cage. See Figure 4B. Install
rem aining bearin g as instructed in Step 3.
Ring Gear or Differential Case Replacement
1.
Rem ove
