DIFFERENTIAL CASE
Preload and Adjustment
1.
Place differential assem bly (with pinion assem bled)
into housing. Install bearin g caps in their p ro p er
position and tighten screws ju st enough to hold the
b earin g cups in place.
2.
Install dial in d icator on carrier w ith in d icato r
button contacting back o f ring gear, as in figure
19F.
3.
Place two screw drivers betw een bearing cup and
housing on ring gear side o f case, and pry ring gear
into m esh w ith pin io n gear as far as it will go. Rock
ring gear to allow bearings to seat and gears to
mesh. W ith force still applied, set indicator to "O " .
4.
R eposition screw drivers on opposite side o f rin g
gear and pry ring gear as fa r as it will go. Now take
an in dicator reading. R epeat until the sam e re ad in g
is obtain ed every tim e. T his reading will be the
necessary am ount o f shim s between the differential
case and differential b earin g on the ring gear side.
Rem ove differential bearing from the ring gear side
and assem ble p ro p er am ount o f shims. R eassem ble
bearing.
5.
Rem ove the differential bearing from the opposite
side o f ring gear. To determ ine the am ount o f
shim s needed here, use the following m ethod.
a.
S ubtract the size o f shim pack just installed on
rin g gear side o f case from the reading ob tain ed
and recorded in step 10 o f D ifferential C ase—
R eassem bly.
b.
To this figure, add an ad d itio n al .015" shim s to
com pensate fo r preload and backlash.
Exam ple: If read in g in step 10 o f D ifferential C ase—
R eassem bly was .085", and the shim s installed on
ring gear side o f case was .055", the correct am ount
o f shim will be .085" — .055" + .015" = .045".
6.
Install shim s as indicated in step 5, (which will give
the p ro p e r b earin g preload and backlash) and
install side bearing.
Installation
1.
S pread differential carrier, using sp reader as shown
in figure 15F.
2.
Install differential bearin g outer races in th eir
correct location, then install differential case into
carrier.
3.
Install differential b earin g caps in
location as indicated by m arks m ade at disassem
bly.
