PCL (printer command language) A page description language developed by Hewlett
-Packard. It is sometimes referred to as HP PCL. Numerous versions of PCL exist,
including PCL5c for color.
Photoconductor A metallic substance, used in eletophotographic printers, that
conducts and retains electrical charges until they are exposed to light.
Ping A protocol for testing whether a particular computer is connected to the Internet
by sending a packet to its IP address and waiting for a response. The name actually
comes from submarine active sonar, where a sound signal -called a "ping"- is
broadcast, and surrounding objects are revealed by their reflections of the sound. A
UNIX utility that implements the ping protocol.
Pixel The smallest unit of a digitized picture. Pixel is a contraction of words "picture
element". A scan's spatial resolution is usually measured in pixels or dots per inch.
Platen The glass bed of a analog copier, digital copier, scanner, or digital duplicator.
Hard copy originals are placed on the platen as part of the process of being
reproduced.
Portrait Page orientation in which the page height exceeds the page width.
PostScript A page description language developed by Adobe Systems that has
become the defacto standard in desktop publishing, design and graphic arts
applications.
Presentation Layer The sixth of seven layers in the OSI model. Its job is to ensure
that two computers wanting to communicate establish the ground rules for how they
can interoperate.
Pre-raster Images Pages that have been translated into a raster by a RIP and are
able to be stored for later output.
Primary domain controller The server at which the master copy of a domain's user
accounts database is maintained. The primary domain controller also validates logon
requests. A LAN Manager term.
