To start a Heatilator I100 fireplace without a working remote, follow these steps:

1. Ensure Safety: Make sure the fireplace is properly installed and maintained. Keep flammable materials away.
2. Pre-Warm the Flue: Hold a rolled-up piece of burning newspaper under the flue damper for a few moments to help establish a draft.
3. Arrange Kindling: Place small pieces of wood in a ‘tent’ shape on the fireplace grate.
4. Ignite the Fire: Light crumpled paper to ignite the kindling.
5. Add Firewood: Once a hot bed of embers is established, add at least three split logs with space for airflow.

For gas log sets or gas log lighters, follow the manufacturer's instructions. If unsure, consult a qualified technician.
