C. FARE (Film Automatic Retouching and Enhancement)
1. Outline
CanoScan 8000F employs an infrared LED in addition to the FAU lamp (cold cathode
fluorescent lamp) in order to remove scratches and dirt on a film by transmitting a film by two
light sources. This function is called FARE (Film Automatic Retouching and Enhancement).
The infrared LED scans only scratches and dirt on a film as image data. This image data is
compared to the full image data scanned by the FAU lamp, and the overlapping data of
scratches and dirt is subtracted, then this area is compensated for by sampling the ambient
data. Accordingly, the image without scratches and dirt is reproduced.
