INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE

3. Off-season storage

Before you put your outboard motor
1
in storage, it is a good opportunity to
have it serviced and prepared by your
dealer.
2
!
Before servicing the motor for storage:
3
Remove the spark plug caps from
the spark plugs.
Do not run the motor out of the water.
4
Wash the engine exterior and
flush the cooling water system
5
thoroughly with fresh water. Drain
the water completely. (Reference P35)
Wipe off any surface water with an
6
oily rag.
Use a dry cloth to completely
wipe off water and salt from the
7
electrical components.
Drain all fuel from the fuel hoses,
and carburetor, and clean these
8
parts.
Keep in mind that if gasoline
9
is kept in the carburetor for a
long time, gum and varnish will
develop, causing the float valve to
10
stick, restricting the fuel flow.
Remove the spark plugs and
spray storage oil (available from
11
an authorized dealer) into the
combustion chamber through
the spark plug holes while slowly
12
turning the motor over using the
recoil starter.
Change the engine oil.
13
Change the gear oil in the gear
case.
14

Apply grease to the propeller shaft.
Apply rust prevention to nuts and
bolts, etc.
Stand the outboard motor up
vertically in a dry place, or tiller
h a n d l e f a c e u p a n d p l a c e d .
(Reference P29)

!
Be sure to use cloth to remove fuel
remaining in the cowl and dispose of it
in accordance with local fire prevention
and environment protection regulations.

4. Pre-season check

Check that the shift and throttle
function properly.
(Be sure to turn the propeller shaft
when checking the shift function
or else the shift linkage may be
damaged.)
Notes
The following steps must be taken
when first using the engine after
winter storage.
Fill fuel tank completely.
Warm up the engine for 3 minutes
in the Neutral (N) position.
Run the engine for 5 minutes at the
slowest speed.
Run the engine for 10 minutes at
half speed.
In Steps
and
above, the oil
used for storage inside the engine
will be flushed out to assure optimum
performance.
