Changing the Engine Oil
If the engine hasbeen recentlyrun,the engine,mufflerand sur-
roundingmetal surfaceswill be hotand can causeburnsto the skin.
Exercisecautionto avoidburns.

Removethe air filter cover.
To removethe air filter,lift the end of thefilter.See Figure28.

NOTE:The oil filter shouldbe changedat every oil changeinterval.To
completean oil change,proceedas follows:
1. Withengine OFF butstill warm,disconnectspark plugwire and
keepit awayfrom spark plug.
2. Removethe oil fill cap/dipstickfromthe oil fill tube.See Figure27.

3. Disconnectthe oil drain hosefrom the sideof theengine.
4. Turnand removethe oil drain cap. Carefullylowerthe quick oil
drain intoan approvedcontainer.
5. Afterthe oil has drained,installthe oil drain cap. Attachtheoil
drain hoseto the sideof the engine.
Usedoil is a hazardouswasteproduct.Disposeof usedoil properly.
Do notdiscardwith householdwaste.Checkwith your localauthori-
ties or or contact 1-800-4-MY-HOME fora list of safedisposal/
recyclingfacilities.
6. Reconnectspark plugwire.
Air Cleaner
If filters, or coversare not installedcorrectlyseriousinjuryor death
couldresultfrom backfire.Do notattemptto start theenginewith
them removed.

3. Removethe pre-cleanerfrom the filter.
4. To loosendebris,gently tapthe filter on a hardsurface.If thefilter
is excessively dirty,replacewith a newfilter.
5. Washthe pre-cleanerin liquid detergentand water.Allowit to
thoroughlyair dry. Do not oil the pre-cleaner.
6. Assemblethe dry pre-cleanerto the filter.
7. Installthe filter intothe enginebaseand pushdown untilthe filter
snaps in place.
8. Installthe cover.
Spark Plug
1. Cleanarea aroundthe sparkplug base. Donot sandblastspark
plug. Sparkplugshouldbe cleanedby scrapingor wirebrushing
and washingwith a commercialsolvent
Removeand inspectthe sparkplug.Checkgap to make sureit is
set at .030".See Figure29.

3. Replace the spark plug (Champion® RC12YC)once a season.
Do notuse pressurized air or solventsto cleanthe air cleaner
cartridge.
