Fuel Filter
Muffler
Gasolineand its vaporsare extremelyflammableand explosive.Fire
or explosioncan cause severeburnsor death.
Keepgasolineawayfrom sparks,open flames,pilotlights,heat,
and otherignition sources.
Checkfuellines, tank,cap, and fittingsfrequentlyfor cracks
or leaks.Replaceif necessary.Seea Searsor other qualified
servicedealerto replacefuel line.
Beforereplacingthe fuel filter,drain the fueltank or closethe fuel
shut-offvalve.
Replacement p arts mustbe the same and installedin the same
positionas the originalparts.
If fuelspills,wait until it evaporatesbeforestartingengine.
To Drainthe Fuel:
1.
Locatethefuel filter,whichis routedon the left sideof theengine
betweenthe fuel tank and the carburetor, a nd may be attachedto
the enginewith a tie strap.
2.
Cut the tie strap,if present,thenpinchthe in-line clampon the
fuelfilter with a pair of pliers.
3.
Slide theclamp up the fuel line.
4.
Pull thefuel line free fromthe filter and placethe open end of the
line intoan approvedcontainerto drainthe fuel.
To Replace the FuelFilter:
1.
Beforereplacingthe fuel filter,drain the fueltank or closethe fuel
shut-offvalve.Otherwise, f uel can leakout and causea fire or
explosion.
2.
Use pliersto squeezetabs on theclamps,then slidethe clamps
awayfrom thefuel filter.Twistand pull thefuel linesoff of the fuel
filter.See Figure30.

Checkthefuel linesfor cracksor leaks.Replaceif necessary.
4.
Replacethefuel filter with an originalequipmentreplacement
filter.
5.
Securethe fuel lineswith the clamps.
Temperature of mufflerand nearbyengineareasmay exceed150 ° F
(65°0).Avoidcontactwith theseareas.
Inspectmufflerperiodically,and replaceif necessary.Replacement
partsfor the mufflermustbe the sameand installedin the same
positionas the originalparts.
Clean Engine
Donot usewaterto cleanengine parts.Watercouldcontaminate fuel
system.Usea brushor dry cloth.
Dailyor beforeevery use,cleangrass,chaff or accumulated
debrisfrom engine.Keeplinkage,spring,and controlsclean.
Keepareaaroundand behindmufflerfree of anycombustible
debris.
Keepingenginecleanallowsair movement a roundengine.
Engineparts shouldbe kept cleanto reducethe risk of overheat-
ing and ignitionof accumulated debris.
Carburetor
Adjustment
The carburetor on this engineis notadjustable.
Battery
Batteryposts,terminals,and relatedaccessoriescontainlead and
lead compounds, c hemicalsknownto the Stateof Californiato cause
cancerand reproductive harm.Wash handsafter handling.
The batteryis sealedand is maintenance-free. Acidlevelscannot be
checkedand fluid can notbe added.
Alwayskeepthe batterycablesand terminalscleanand free of
corrosivebuild-up.
After cleaningthe batteryand terminals,applya lightcoat of
petroleum jelly or greaseto bothterminals.
If removingthe batteryforcleaning,disconnectthe NEGATIVE
(Black)wire from its terminalfirst, followedby the POSITIVE(Red)
wire. Whenreinstalling the battery,alwaysconnectthe POSITIVE
(Red)wire to its terminalfirst, followedbythe NEGATIVE (Black)
wire. Be certainthat the wires are connectedto the correctterminals;
reversing them couldresult in seriousdamageto yourengine's
alternatingsystem.
