Tips
Always:
1. Use cleanfluidand checkthe fluid levelregularly.
2. Use an approvedhydraulicfluid.Approvedfluids includeDexron®
III / Mercon®automatic transmissionfluid or a 10WeightAW
hydraulicoil.
3. Use a filter (cleanor replaceregularly).
4. Use a breathercap on the fluid reservoir.
5. Makesurethe pumpis mountedand alignedproperly.
6. Use a flexible"spider"type couplingbetweenthe engineand pump
driveshafts.
7. Keepthe hosesclear and unblocked.
8. Bleedthe air out of the hoses beforeoperating.
9. Flushand cleanthe hydraulicsystembeforerestartingafter servic-
ing.
10.Use "pipedope"on all hydraulicfittings.
11.Allowtime forthe engineto warm-upbeforesplittingwood.
12.Primethe pumpbeforethe initialstart-upbyturningovertheengine
with sparkplug disconnected.
13.Splitthe woodalongthe grain (lengthwise)only.
Never:
1. Use whenfluidis below200F or above1500E
2. Use a solidengine/pumpcoupling.
3. Operatethroughthe reliefvalvefor long.
4. Attempttoadjust unloadingor relid valvesettingswithoutpressure
gauges.
5. Operatewith air in the hydraulicsystem.
6. Use teflontapeon the hydraulicfittings.

Attemptto cut woodacrossthe grain.
Attemptto removepartiallysplit woodfromthe wedgewith your
hands.Fullyretractthewedgeto dislodgethe woodwith the log
dislodger.
TRANSPORTING
THE LOG SPLITTER
IMPORTANT: Alwaysturn the fuelvalve to the OFFpositionbefore
transportingthe log splitter.
1. Lowerthe beamto its horizontalposition.Makecertainthe beamis
lockedsecurelywiththe horizontal b eamlock.
2. Removespringclip and clevispin fromjack stand.
3. Supportthe tongueand pivot thejack standup againstthe tongue.

4. Securethejack withthe springclip and clevispin previously
removed.See Figure4-5.
5. Attachthe couplerhitchto a class I or higher2" ball on a towing
vehicle.Latchsecurely.
a. If the couplerhitchdoes notfit on the ball: Turntheadjust-
ment nutone turncounter-clockwise.
b. If the couplerhitch is too loose on the ball: Turntheadjust-
ment nutone turnclockwise.
6. Connectthe safetychainsto the towingvehicle.
7. Plugin thetail lights,if so equipped,to the tail light connectoron
the tow vehicle.
Donot tow fasterthan 45 mph and checklocal, state,and federal
requirements beforetowingon any public road.
NOTE:Usecautionwhenbackingup. Usinga spotteroutsideof the
vehicleis recommended.
