Page 7 DEVICES FOR REDUCING PETROL ENGINE EMISSIONS Three-way catalytic converter (catalytic exhaust pipe) The exhaust system is equipped with a catalyst made up of noble metal alloys; it is housed in a stainless steel container capable of withstanding the very high operating temperatures. The catalyst converts the unburnt hydrocarbons, the carbon monoxide and the nitric oxides found in the exhaust gases (though in small amounts, thanks to the electronic-injection ignition systems) into non-polluting substances.
