Hardware and software components

A typical configuration consists of a P9500 storage system, a host connected to the storage system,
Business Copy Z software, a source volume, a target volume or volumes, and interface tools for
operating Business Copy Z.
Interface tools include the Remote Web Console graphical user interface (GUI), Business Continuity
Manager, IBM PPRC host software functions, or IBM DFSMSdss host software functions.

Volume pairs (S-VOLs and T-VOLs)

A pair consists of the primary and secondary data volume and the volume. Each source volume
(S-VOL) can be paired with up to three target volumes (T-VOLs). Thus, you can create three pairs
using one S-VOL.
During most operations, the S-VOL remains available to the host for I/O operations. When the
S-VOL is updated, the new data, called differential data, is copied to the T-VOL regularly. Because
T-VOLs are updated asynchronously, the S-VOL and T-VOL may not be identical. T-VOLs become
available for host access only after the pair has been split or deleted.

Remote Web Console GUI

The Remote Web Console GUI communicates with the storage system's service processor (SVP)
over defined TCP/IP connections. Remote Web Console is LAN-attached to the system.
With the GUI, you enable the Business Copy Z license key, configure the system, perform copy
operations, and perform monitoring, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

PPRC, Business Continuity Manager, and consistency groups

PPRC or Business Continuity Manager can be used to perform most of the same operations as with
Remote Web Console, but using a command line interface. Pair operation commands are issued
directly from the host. Business Copy Z pair operations can also be automated with PPRC or
Business Continuity Manager using scripts.
Using PPRC or Business Continuity Manager, you can specify multiple pairs as a consistency or
copy group. With a consistency or copy group, pair operations can be performed on multiple
pairs at one time. This also allows you to change the pair status for all the pairs in a group.
