2 Requirements and specifications

This chapter provides basic system requirements. In addition to the information in this section,
"Planning for Continuous Access Synchronous" (page 15)
recommendations, and restrictions for the elements of a Continuous Access Synchronous system
that require attention before setting up and using Continuous Access Synchronous.

System requirements

Continuous Access Synchronous operations require the P9500 primary and secondary systems
containing the P-VOLs and S-VOLs, data paths between the systems, host(s) on the primary and
remote sites, and interface software.
The following table lists and describe general requirements.

OPEN-V
All LU types that P9500 supports (OPEN-3, OPEN-8, OPEN-9, OPEN-K, OPEN-E, OPEN-L,
and OPEN-V)
At the primary site, P9500 is required.
At the secondary site, the following models may be used:
P9500
XP24000/XP20000 Disk Array (60-07-51-xx/xx or later)
XP12000/XP10000 Disk Array (50-09-98-xx/xx or later)
Contact HP Technical Support for assistance.
Continuous Access Synchronous supports RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 6 configurations.
Separate license codes are required for each system.
Must be installed on primary and secondary systems.
Synchronous only. P9500 does not support Asynchronous.
Can coexist with Continuous Access Synchronous Z.
None.
However, when combining Continuous Access Synchronous and Thin Provisioning, the
following licensed capacity limitations apply:
If using a Thin Provisioning (V-VOL) virtual volume for the Continuous Access
Synchronous P-VOL or S-VOL, the capacity of the allocated pages for V-VOL will be
counted as the licensed capacity of Continuous Access Synchronous.
If the actual licensed capacity exceeds the available licensed capacity, Continuous
Access Synchronous can be used as usual for 30 days. After 30 days, only split or
release operations will be allowed.
