There is a Bathymetric Option available for expanding the ME70 utility value. The bathymetry option provided for the ME70 allows you to use the ME70 not only as a scientific multibeam echo sounder for fishery research applications, but also as a multibeam echo sounder for high-resolution seabed mapping.

Kongsberg ME70/MS70 Maintenance Manual MS70 – System description The MS70 is a high-resolution multibeam scientific sonar with very low sidelobe levels. It is designed for collection of data from the water column. The MS70 offers a new dimension to fishery research. As a school of fish changes shape and density constantly, the MS70 is the best possible tool to understand these dynamics with remote sensing.

The ME70/MS70 system supports the use of multiple displays, with a maximum of three. You may find it useful to have more than one display connected to the ME70/MS70 system. The number of displays must be chosen to fit the preferences of the crew. With more than one display connected, use the operating system functionality to control the presentations.
The purpose of the Processing Unit is to control the ME70/MS70 operations. The Processing Unit contains the operational software, and offers the user interface that allows you to control the ME70/MS70. Furthermore, it offers a number of serial and Ethernet lines for communication with external devices.
These echoes are filtered, amplified and finally converted into digital format. The ME70/MS70 Transceiver Unit is housed in a 19-inch instrument rack. Easy access to the front and rear of the rack is essential for smooth replacement of parts. In order to reduce the loss in the transducer cables, the Transceiver Unit must be located as close to the transducer as possible.

• Air circulation fans Note To ensure that it is safe to perform maintenance on the ME70/MS70 transceiver, there is a LED lamp on the front part of the transceiver's cabinet. When the LED lamp is off, it means that there is no voltage present in the transceiver cabinet, and thus that it is safe to perform maintenance.

The transducer elements are located at the "bottom" of the transducer. The transducer cables are provided as 25 individual cables in three bundles. Each cable is terminated in a large male connector.

Kongsberg ME70/MS70 Maintenance Manual Preventive maintenance schedule In order to secure a long and trouble-free operation of the ME70/MS70 system, certain specific preventive maintenance tasks must be done. The tasks are organized in a preventive maintenance schedule. The ME70/MS70 is a state of the art Multibeam scientific echo sounder/sonar. With the exception of the cabinet fans, there are no moving parts.
Preventive maintenance Actions to be taken during dry docking Do a visual inspection of the transducer. Clean the transducer and remove marine growth. If necessary, apply anti-fouling paint as described in the dedicated procedure. Inspect the physical conditions of the sacrificial anodes. Check for damage and corrosion.

Make sure that neither the room itself nor any of the system units have been subjected to corrosive attacks. Take the necessary corrective actions if the environmental conditions are poor.
Preventive maintenance Inspecting and cleaning the Processing Unit To ensure long and trouble-free operation of the Processing Unit it must be inspected and cleaned at regular intervals. Prerequisites No special tools are required for this task. You will however need a commercially available mild detergent and a lint free cloth.
Kongsberg ME70/MS70 Maintenance Manual Make sure that the fans are running smoothly and efficient without obstructions, noise or vibrations. Inefficient fans must be replaced. Make sure that the fan filters are free from excessive dust, and able to secure a clean and proper airflow.

Do a thorough visual inspection of the transducer. Inspect it closely for any signs of dents, cracks, fractures or holes. If you find suspicious damage, take high resolution photos that show the damage, and contact Kongsberg Discovery support for advice.

The properties of the transducer face combined with the thickness of the anti-fouling paint can also affect the overall performance. Kongsberg Discovery cannot be held responsible for any negative consequences of the anti-fouling paint.
Sacrificial anodes are used to protect the transducer from corrosion. Sacrificial anodes are slowly disintegrating during normal wear and tear. They must be inspected whenever the vessel is in dry dock. The sacrificial anodes used with the ME70/MS70 transducer are provided by Kongsberg Discovery.

However, key components that fail will in most cases be detected by the tools you have available. The most important tool is your own knowledge about the ME70/MS70. Based on a list of the main components in the system, brief descriptions of what they do and how they work, including suggested certain symptoms, you may work out the possible solutions.
For installation of a commercial computer, refer to the manual supplied by the manufacturer. Note Make sure that the chosen computer meets the ME70/MS70 requirements. The design and construction must allow for marine use, and the computer must be able to withstand the movements and vibrations normally experienced on a vessel.

Corrective maintenance The power supply unit converts 230 VAC to the operating voltage levels of the ME70/MS70 system. It generates 12 VDC for the transceiver electronics and 75 VDC for the transmit electronics. The power supply unit has input and output connectors on the rear, one network connector in the front for control, one control switch and one LED lamp for indicating status.

Do not attempt to recharge such batteries, open them, or dispose of them by incineration. Refer to the applicable product data sheets or battery handling procedures for further details.
Kongsberg ME70/MS70 Maintenance Manual Any units that requires protection against extreme temperatures are identified as such in the applicable documentation. The box used to transport and store such units are clearly marked, for example: Must not be transported or stored in temperatures below -5 °C.
Wipe clean all exposed cables, and check for damage. If a cable shows signs of wear or ageing, contact Kongsberg Discovery for advice. Check if the unit contains batteries. If the unit contains batteries, these may discharge slowly during storage. If the unit is to be stored for an extended period, disconnect or remove all internal batteries.
Kongsberg ME70/MS70 Maintenance Manual A suitable piece of insulating material can be placed between the battery and the electrical contacts to prevent electrical discharge. The battery can then remain in the unit, reducing the risk of it being misplaced during the storage period.
Clean damaged or suspect areas, prepare and preserve these areas using the correct preservation mediums. Wipe clean all exposed cables, and check for damage. If a cable shows signs of wear or ageing, contact Kongsberg Discovery for advice. Secure and protect loose parts (shock absorbers, plug and sockets, protruding objects etc).
Kongsberg ME70/MS70 Maintenance Manual Unpacking and handling printed circuit boards and electronic modules Circuit boards and electronic modules are delicate items. They may work year after year in an advanced product, but then fail due to a small spark of static electricity. For this reason, it is very important that they are properly unpacked and handled, and then well protected during all handling.
If a unit has been damaged, prepare an inspection report stating the condition of the unit and actions taken. Describe the damage, and collect photographic evidence if possible. Return the inspection report to Kongsberg Discovery as soon as possible. Assuming all is well, open the bag and remove the unit. Note Do not break the seal to open a printed circuit board, an electronic module or a unit before it shall be used.
