    Kongsberg ME70/MS70 Maintenance Manual MS70 – System description The MS70 is a high-resolution multibeam scientific sonar with very low sidelobe levels. It is designed for collection of data from the water column. The MS70 offers a new dimension to fishery research. As a school of fish changes shape and density constantly, the MS70 is the best possible tool to understand these dynamics with remote sensing.

    The ME70/MS70 system supports the use of multiple displays, with a maximum of three. You may find it useful to have more than one display connected to the ME70/MS70 system. The number of displays must be chosen to fit the preferences of the crew. With more than one display connected, use the operating system functionality to control the presentations.

    The purpose of the Processing Unit is to control the ME70/MS70 operations. The Processing Unit contains the operational software, and offers the user interface that allows you to control the ME70/MS70. Furthermore, it offers a number of serial and Ethernet lines for communication with external devices.

    These echoes are filtered, amplified and finally converted into digital format. The ME70/MS70 Transceiver Unit is housed in a 19-inch instrument rack. Easy access to the front and rear of the rack is essential for smooth replacement of parts. In order to reduce the loss in the transducer cables, the Transceiver Unit must be located as close to the transducer as possible.

When the LED lamp is off, it means that there is no voltage present in the transceiver cabinet, and thus that it is safe to perform maintenance.

The transducer elements are located at the "bottom" of the transducer. The transducer cables are provided as 25 individual cables in three bundles. Each cable is terminated in a large male connector.

    Observe and follow these safety precautions during all installation and maintenance work. WARNING The ME70/MS70 system operates on 115 VAC and/or 230 VAC at 50/60 Hz. This voltage is lethal! You must never work alone on high-voltage equipment! This equipment must be installed, adjusted, and serviced only by qualified electrical maintenance personnel familiar with the construction and operation of the equipment and the hazards involved.

Equipment manufactured by Kongsberg Discovery is often connected to a local area network (LAN). When you connect a computer to a local area network you will always expose the data on that computer.

    Kongsberg ME70/MS70 Maintenance Manual Preventive maintenance schedule In order to secure a long and trouble-free operation of the ME70/MS70 system, certain specific preventive maintenance tasks must be done. The tasks are organized in a preventive maintenance schedule. The ME70/MS70 is a state of the art Multibeam scientific echo sounder/sonar. With the exception of the cabinet fans, there are no moving parts.

    Preventive maintenance Actions to be taken during dry docking Do a visual inspection of the transducer. Clean the transducer and remove marine growth. If necessary, apply anti-fouling paint as described in the dedicated procedure. Inspect the physical conditions of the sacrificial anodes. Check for damage and corrosion.

    Preventive maintenance Inspecting and cleaning the Processing Unit To ensure long and trouble-free operation of the Processing Unit it must be inspected and cleaned at regular intervals. Prerequisites No special tools are required for this task. You will however need a commercially available mild detergent and a lint free cloth.

    Kongsberg ME70/MS70 Maintenance Manual Make sure that the fans are running smoothly and efficient without obstructions, noise or vibrations. Inefficient fans must be replaced. Make sure that the fan filters are free from excessive dust, and able to secure a clean and proper airflow.

    Sacrificial anodes are used to protect the transducer from corrosion. Sacrificial anodes are slowly disintegrating during normal wear and tear.
