Conclusions and recommendations
Implementing the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution in an IBM Lotus Domino environment impacts the messaging
server performance. To reduce the impact, consider the following recommendations:
If you implement the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution, verify that the IBM Lotus Domino server has sufficient
processor capacity and disk I/O bandwidth to handle the expected load imposed by the volume of BlackBerry
user accounts under a MMB2 workload.
Plan for a CPU use increase on messaging servers that host BlackBerry user accounts.
Configure enough disks in the disk array for the messaging servers so that no disk bottlenecks occur. The
average disk queue length should be less than one for each spindle in the disk array. Disk I/O activity
increases when users on the messaging server are enabled for BlackBerry devices. To verify that enough disk
space is present in the disk array, monitor the average disk queue length. For SAN disk implementations,
measure sec/transfer and make sure that this value is less than 20 ms.
Verify that the IBM Lotus Domino server has enough memory. View pages/sec in conjunction with committed
bytes and available bytes to confirm if memory bottlenecks occur. IBM Lotus Domino performs its own
memory management; it has been observed to generate high paging activity under heavy load.
Place the BlackBerry Enterprise Server close to the messaging servers.
Use a high-speed switched connection between the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the IBM Lotus Domino
server. Network latency impacts the performance of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
When you use MSDE 2000, make sure that the workload governor is not activated. If the workload governor is
activated, the message "This SQL Server has been optimized for 8 concurrent queries. This limit has been
exceeded by 1 queries and performance may be adversely affected" appears in the event viewer. If this event
occurs frequently, you should upgrade the BlackBerry Configuration Database to Microsoft SQL Server 2000.
When you use MSDE 2000, monitor the database size. If the 2-GB limit is approaching, the message
"BESMgmt is approaching the MSDE 2 GB limit. Current size is 1600 MB" appears in the event viewer. If this
limit is reached, upgrade the BlackBerry Configuration Database to Microsoft SQL Server 2000. Visit
