8: BlackBerry Enterprise Server performance test results
Memory use
The data collected from the performance tests indicates that the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Version 4.1 uses
more memory than previous versions. The committed bytes count was as high as 1.6 GB for 2000 user accounts
with the BlackBerry Attachment Service enabled. Because all core BlackBerry Services run by default, when
features are enabled, the difference in memory use is relatively minor. When all features are enabled, the
BlackBerry Enterprise Server uses about 1.64 GB of memory for 2000 user accounts.
Because you can choose not to install the BlackBerry Collaboration Service and the BlackBerry MDS Services, and
because these components were not part of the benchmarking for this document, RIM did not install them. If
these components are installed and running, even if they are not being used, a footprint is associated with them.
Consider these footprints in your monitoring.

Messages queued for delivery
In their testing, RIM monitored the number of messages or calendar items that the BlackBerry Enterprise Server
had queued, either through notification or rescans, for delivery to BlackBerry devices. The messages queued for
delivery represent internal processing delays associated with processing this type of load when there are no
wireless network delays and no users are outside of a wireless coverage area. A message remains queued until the
BlackBerry Enterprise Server receives an acknowledgement from the BlackBerry Infrastructure indicating that the
message has been delivered.
During the performance load testing, the maximum number of messages that were queued on average was less
than three.
